Biological Technician – Bureau of Land Management in Corvallis, OR
Background:
We are hiring students to help with an aquatic organism passage effectiveness study on the Siuslaw National Forest in the Oregon Coast Range. Crews will be working on movement and demographic studies of aquatic organisms (fish, amphibians, and crayfish) through barriers (i.e. culverts).
Description:
We will hire three biological technicians at the GS-04 pay grade ($13.41/hour). These positions will start June 18 and end on September 21. Crews will work four ten hour days some weeks and eight days on followed by six days off during part of the summer when there are long travel times to work sites. During these work stints, crews will camp at dispersed sites and/or campgrounds. All positions are field based; employees will spend very little time in the office during the field season. Government housing is NOT available.
Duties:
Crews will collect data using fisheries techniques including electrofishing; tagging/marking fish and amphibians; and tracking fish using stationary and mobile antennae.
Required Qualifications:
• A valid state driver’s license.
• Completion of a comprehensive background investigation which includes fingerprints.
• A U.S. citizen.
• Currently enrolled in a degree seeking program at any community college, college, or university and plan to be enrolled next fall. Students graduating this Spring are not eligible fore these positions.
• Taking enough credits to be considered enrolled half time.
• Passing with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Note this is a MINIMUM requirement.
• Ability to conduct field work that requires frequent twisting, bending, stooping, lifting, carrying of heavy equipment, and other strenuous physical activities associated with working in steep, rugged terrain and streams.
