POSITION: Engineering Technician — Surface Water
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
HOURLY SALARY: $24.06 – $29.27 with excellent benefit package

JOB DESCRIPTION: Provide skilled technical work that includes field inspections for stormwater infrastructure and citizen requests, maintenance and updates of the GIS and computer maintenance management system (CMMS) database for the Surface Water Utility, and support to the water quality monitoring program and other Surface Water Utility National Pollution Discharge and Elimination System (NPDES) permit related programs including educational outreach and illicit discharge and detection inspections.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Within assigned program area, coordinate with maintenance and operations work, including data collection and assessment of drainage/flooding problems, field measurements and engineering record/design information; conduct thorough and complete research and analysis for staff reports, policy proposals and proposed surface water infrastructure standards.
• Perform inspections of commercial, residential, and regional stormwater facilities for compliance with City adopted maintenance standards.
• Support surface water quality monitoring program, including maintenance of samplers, recorders and gauges.
• Provide public meeting assistance including preparation of materials, interaction with public to obtain comments and summarizing information; assist in the investigation of drainage/flooding concerns identified by staff, citizens and other agencies.
• Assist in conducting studies for the installation of projects to alleviate drainage/flooding concerns, improve water quality and improve habitat within program area, as assigned. Perform routine engineering survey work including stream measurements and drainage work, utilizing data extrapolation, analysis and summarization to support these efforts.
• Develop, use and maintain stormwater inspection and maintenance record systems including; update and maintain applicable database systems; use survey equipment to monitor or measure project progress or to document existing conditions.
• Provide special event technical assistance for weather events such as flooding and windstorms, street failures and similar events.
• Assist in the condition assessments of the City’s stormwater conveyance system.
• Assist the Surface Water and Environmental Services Manager in surface water basin planning.
Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: One or more years of related experience in drafting and civil engineering technician related work; or one or more years in construction project management, budget preparation, management analysis, technical report preparation and presentation and public presentations.
Training: Equivalent to a two-year degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, sciences (environmental, geological, biological etc.), drafting or a related field.
A valid Washington State Drivers License with insurable driving record.
