JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the Priest Rapids No Net Impact Project is to reduce juvenile salmonid mortality at fish screens located at water diversions. The incumbent in this position is responsible for implementing the contract deliverables such as upgrading and replacing existing fish screens, completing enhancement projects, working with maintenance personnel to maintain existing fish screens and providing technical assistant to state, federal, and local governments, tribes, and private citizens regarding fish screen design, construction, operation, maintenance, and funding.

 
DUTIES:

 

·         Conduct site reviews to identify and prioritize fish screening projects; collect and analyze data and propose conceptual design options to minimize negative effects on juvenile salmonids.

·         Plan, develop, and coordinate screen inspections and maintenance; work jointly with the Yakima screen shop for maintenance activities and to ensure environmental compliance of fish screens.

·         Apply for environmental permits for construction of fish screening projects.

·         Contract with engineers to complete fish screen design work; evaluate engineered drawings related to juvenile fish requirements and design criteria.

·         Monitor project budget and contract; pursue cost-share and grant opportunities.

·         Facilitate landowner agreements to conduct environmental compliance monitoring on private property.

·         Prepare monitoring and inspection reports for supervisor and funding organization.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

·         Work in the field in all weather conditions, walk streams and over rugged terrain up to 20% of the time.

·         Work hours outside of the regular 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday work hours including evenings and weekends.

·         Transport equipment weighing up to 30 pounds over uneven terrain.

·         Travel up to 30% of the time including occasional overnight trips.

·         Safely operate motor vehicles.

 

UNION

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP), which contains a “union security” provision. This means that, as a condition of employment, you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representation or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.

 

 
QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required

A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science, or closely related field, AND one year of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research.

OR

One year of experience as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1.

A Master’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science, or closely related field may substitute for the one year of experience.

A valid Washington State, or other state, driver’s license.

 

Preferred

A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or related field.

Project management experience.

 

Competencies

·         Knowledge of life history for all species of salmonids.

·         Habitat requirements of salmonids.
