This is a project permanent position in the Wild Salmonid Production Evaluation Unit in the Fish Program.

The duty station is in Port Angeles and the project is funded through June 30, 2013.
The position functions as the project manager for the Elwha Weir Project. This position supervises weir operation,
analyzes data, and summarizes results in written and oral format. The Elwha Weir Project is part of a multi-agency effort
to assess the abundance and survival of wild salmon and steelhead on the Elwha River and to evaluate the contributions
of restoration strategies to ecosystem restoration. The position prepares annual and contractual reports describing study
designs and project outcomes. This position reports to immediate supervisor and interacts with WDFW Region 6 staff as
well as personnel from Tribal, Federal, and local agencies and the general public.

Duties:
This is a supervisory position and key responsibilities include:
· Plans, manages, and conducts weir operations in order to capture and biologically sample adult salmonids on the Elwha River.

Analyzes data, prepares written annual reports, and develops and delivers oral presentations.
· Collaborate on field activities and study plans with agency and inter-agency staff contributing to fish restoration on
the Elwha River.
· Directs and supervises technical staff to achieve project objectives.
Working Conditions
This position is stationed in Port Angeles, WA. The incumbent will work in an office or field environment, on a seasonal
basis. Work in an office environment will be a 5-day, 40 hour/week schedule. Work in the field environment includes long
periods of field activity and includes some night and weekend work. Familiarity with trapping equipment is essential for
this position. Resistance-board weirs have no cover, are exposed to inclement weather (including rain, wind, icy
conditions, etc), and are subject to variable river flows. Job requires heavy lifting by employees (50+ lbs), including such
items as large salmon and steelhead, chain saws, generators, and pumps. A valid Washington State Driver’s License
Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science and three years
of professional experience in Fish management or Fish research. OR A Master’s degree in the applicable science will
substitute one year of the required experience. OR A Ph.D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two years of
the required experience. OR Two years as a Biologist 2.

Competencies
· Experience with construction, installation, and operation of resistance-board weir
· Experience with adult fish handling techniques, including biological sampling (scales, otoliths, lengths).
· Ability to work in and solve problems in a dynamic field environment
· Ability to present scientific results in written and oral format
· Ability to work towards project goals in a collaborative, inter-agency environment
College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely
allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided course work includes at least six semester or
nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
Experience is based on full time equivalency (i.e., 40 or more hours/week). Part time work is prorated (e.g., 20
hours/week for 6 years = 3 years of experience). Do not count experience that was a part of your educational
requirements.
