ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
The Public Fundraising Specialist collaboratively plans, implements and coordinates a program to raise public funds for The Nature Conservancy’s Washington Program. The Public Fundraising Specialist provides strategic government fundraising guidance to conservation program and science staff, and is directly responsible for development and submittal of government grant proposals. The Public Fundraising Specialist identifies government funding opportunities, including traditional state and federal grant programs, as well as innovative funding sources to support Washington Program conservation priorities. S/he collaborates with other Washington Program staff to achieve ambitious annual public fundraising goals. S/he monitors agency initiatives and programs which may provide opportunities for partnerships and/or financial support for TNC programs. S/he serves as a liaison and informational contact between The Nature Conservancy and granting agency staff at federal, state, county, and local municipal agencies and private groups. The Public Fundraising Specialist may also track government policies and decisions that directly affect The Nature Conservancy’s conservation goals, and serve as research coordinator on other issues of public policy and legislation. S/he may provide research and services that assist in influencing the outcome of legislative funding and policy initiatives at federal, state, county and municipal levels.

Responsibilities may include:
• In coordination with Government Relations and program staff, develop and implement annual and multi-year public fundraising strategies for operations and acquisitions, including setting annual public grant fundraising goals and tracking and reporting fundraising results.
• Prospect for, develop, and communicate government grant fundraising strategies to advance The Nature Conservancy’s priority programs and projects.

• Collaborate with program, science and government relations staff to develop, draft and
submit proposals.
• Research, analyze, evaluate and prepare recommendations on innovative public funding
sources to support The Nature Conservancy’s conservation priorities.
• Develop and advance public fundraising strategies to increase funding levels for the
Washington Program’s conservation priorities from public funding sources.
• Support advocacy for priority policies and public funding for programs and projects,
including elements of agency budgets that are key to conservation priorities and advance
the work of The Nature Conservancy and its partners.
• Build and maintain productive relationships and open communications with key federal,
state, and local agency staff.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in English, political science, public policy, environmental studies,
government relations or related field and 4 years related experience, including experience
working with state and federal funding programs or related programs. Equivalent
combination of education and experience acceptable.
• Experience with current government funding and conservation trends and issues in
Washington or in another state.
• Experience developing, coordinating and managing multiple projects.
• Experience preparing, presenting and communicating project proposals and/or soliciting
project support from government and/or program leadership.
• Experience using MS Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. and navigating the Internet.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
• Bachelor’s degree in English, political science, public policy, environmental studies,
government relations or related field and 4-6 years of experience. Equivalent combination
of education and experience acceptable. Experience in grant writing, researching and
editing preferred.
• Superb research, writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of current government funding and conservation trends and issues in
Washington.
• Successful experience developing, coordinating and managing multiple projects.
• Ability to use advanced computer functions. Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret
data.
• Excellent organizational and proofreading skills.

timeline.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• Serve as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate the work of others.
• May need to gain cooperation from individuals or groups (inside and outside the
Conservancy) over whom there is no direct authority in order to accomplish program
goals.
• Financial responsibility includes setting and meeting fundraising objectives, evaluating
results, and developing corrective strategies as needed.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Strong communication and presentation skills. Solicit program support through clear and
concise written communications, including preparation and presentation of proposals.
• Work and communicate with a wide range of people in multiple locations in order to
develop, negotiate and/or implement programs and projects. Work in partnership with
others in a collaborative or advisory role.
• Provides a variety of information to staff and others to assist in workflow throughout the
organization in a timely manner.
