Columbia Springs is located on more than one hundred acres of urban natural areas at the historic Vancouver Trout Hatchery. Columbia Springs’ staff provide a wide variety of formal and informal environmental education programs on-site, in the classroom, and in the community. The site is open daily to the public. Summary of Position – The Environmental Educator is responsible for:
- Developing and administering educational programs for students and community members; working with Columbia Spring’s staff and partners to plan, establish and implement these programs.
- Engaging students, teachers, and community members in environmental stewardship through increased awareness of the unique life cycle of salmon and their habitat requirements.
- Managing the “Salmon in the Classroom” program permits, fish/egg deliveries, and aquarium equipment.
Duties – The Environmental Educator duties include the following:
1. Education: Research, develop, and deliver environmental educational programs to youth and adults.
2. Management: Coordinate and manage the Salmon in the Classroomproject.
3. Outreach:Assist with the planning and coordination of educational, volunteer, and other community activities throughout the Columbia Springs service region.
4. Marketing: Develop newsletters, press releases, web content, and other publications and promotional tools. Conduct public outreach activities in support of Columbia Springs’ mission, projects and fundraising efforts.
5. Volunteers: Work with the Education Director and the Executive Director to expand volunteer involvement through recruitment, supervision and support of volunteer efforts.
6. Finance: Develop andadminister an annual budget for the Salmon in the Classroom Program.
7. Supplies: Manage program equipment and supplies; maintain inventory data bases, repair and/or replace items as necessary.
8. Administration: Assist the Executive, Education and Development Directors in the performance of their roles.
Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of academic and work experience pertaining to environmental education.
2. Basic understanding of aquaria, natural processes, natural history subjects, and environmental stewardship.
3. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.
4. Management skills including budgeting, goal setting, and overall organization.
5. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of employees and community members.
6. Ability to recruit and motivate volunteers.
7. Strong interpersonal skills.
8. Ability to leverage current and emerging technologies (software, internet, networks) to accomplish duties and goals.
9. Ability to meet deadlines.
10. A valid State driver’s license.
11. Ability to work weekends and evenings.
12. Able to lift 50 lbs.
Compensation
This is a non-exempt, regular part-time position (average 35 hours/week). Selected candidate will earn $16/hour ($29,120 annually) and is eligible on a pro-rated basis for all benefits subject to the benefits plan.
