Provides instructional and technical laboratory support to UWT’s Environmental Sciences Program.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
Operate, calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment such as, gas chromatograph (GC) with FID and ECD detectors, high pressure liquid chromatograph (HPLC) with multiple detectors, fourier transform infrared (FTIR), mass spectrometer (MS), field probes and multi-meters, nutrient autoanalyzer, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), particle analyzer, thermal cycler, and research grade microscopes.
Demonstrate to instructors or students use of laboratory equipment and apparatus and assist in set-up. Perform minor maintenance and repair of laboratory apparatus and instruments when necessary.
Work as part of a team and along with student lab assistants to prepare, set up and put away materials for teaching labs. Attend weekly lab meetings and accurately communicate what has been accomplished and what still needs to be done verbally and in written form. Make chemical solutions, standards, biological solutions, microbiological plates, and other materials. Properly label all solutions and keep records of how solutions were prepared. Report any safety issues to Supervisor or Lead.
Help create and update equipment SOPs and maintenance schedules.
Assist in rearing terrestrial and aquatic plants and invertebrates and maintain aquaria. Wash and clean laboratory areas, equipment and glassware. Help maintain a neat and orderly prep-space. Run through labs to trouble-shoot issues.
Take inventory of chemicals, supplies and equipment; put orders in for laboratory equipment and supplies and stock laboratory areas as required.
Help prepare hazardous waste inventories and maintain properly labeled hazardous waste containers. Help in the organization of field and storage areas.
Perform related duties as required
Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00-5:00; Hours may vary depending on lab schedules.

A Bachelor’s Degree with major study in a basic or applied science OR an equivalent combination of training, formal education and/or research, training or service laboratory operations experience.
Additional Skill Requirements:
Knowledge of laboratory principles, practices, and techniques; care and operation of laboratory equipment; common laboratory safety methods, such as handling hazardous chemical and the proper use of fume hoods. Working knowledge of word processing, excel spreadsheets, computer use, and applications.
Ability to use laboratory equipment and train others how to use it; understand and follow detailed written and oral instructions and exercise sound judgment while multi-tasking and prioritizing; to find and interpret MSDS sheets; communicate effectively; maintain cooperative working relations with others.
Once position is accepted completion of various Environmental Health and Safety courses are required.
Condition of Employment: A satisfactory outcome from criminal background verification is required prior to hire.
