The North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) is a small non-profit that works to restore, enhance, and protect habitat of wild salmon and to promote community volunteerism, understanding, cooperation and stewardship of our resources. NOSC is a Regional Fisheries Enhancement Group which means we are designated by the State of Washington to assist with salmon recovery efforts within our region, which stretches from the Hood Canal to Cape Flattery on the Washington Coast. www.nosc.org
Position Summary
The Restoration, Education and Outreach Assistant will work closely with the friendly, hardworking staff of NOSC in the areas of ecosystem restoration and enhancement, salmon recovery, environmental education, data collection, community outreach and volunteer coordination. The REO Assistant will report to the Outreach Coordinator at NOSC but often assist other staff. The intern will work both in the office and out in the field. The intern will monitor completed projects, assist with volunteer events and deliver educational programs. It is our goal that by the end of their term, the Restoration, Education and Outreach Assistant will have gained valuable job skills and diverse experiences in many areas of interest.
Typical Duties
Assist NOSC staff in the following areas:
o Design, implementation and monitoring of community restoration projects
o Education and outreach support including service learning projects, classroom presentations, festival booth staffing, and creation of outreach materials and curriculum
o Diverse field work such as tree planting, fish surveys, water quality monitoring, marsh vegetation surveys, photo point documentation and invasive species control. Training provided.
o Support at various events including workshops, the Native Plant Sale and the Membership Dinner
o Recruitment, coordination and training of volunteers on various projects
o Support with marketing, newsletter, website, database and more
Qualifications
o Minimum Education: College level courses in environmental science, biology, fisheries, ecology, environmental education or related subjects.
o Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills
o Organized, self motivated, high attention to detail
o Good natured team player, comfortable working with many types of people
o Expertise with computer programs such as Excel, Access, Word, Publisher, Power Point
o Willing and able to perform heavy physical labor including digging, wading, handling plants and lifting up to 50 pounds in all kinds of weather
o Access to personal vehicle and willingness to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends for outreach events (reimbursed for mileage at $0.51 per mile)
Desired Skills/Demonstrated Interests
o GIS/GPS knowledge and experience
o Graphic design expertise including experience with programs like Illustrator, Photoshop, Publisher and other Adobe Creative Suite programs
o Ability to operate hand and power tools such as gas mowers and brush cutters
o Knowledge of salmon habitat needs, restoration techniques and native plant identification
o Leadership skills and diplomatic problem solving abilities
o Experience teaching and public speaking
Location: East Jefferson County on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, just outside Port Townsend, WA. Thirty minutes from Olympic National Park, two hours from Seattle, three hours from the Washington Coast and two ferries away from the San Juan Islands.
Salary: $9.04/hour, Typically Mon-Fr (some Saturday events, especially during the winter and summer), 40 hours/week. AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,550 received upon completion of a year of service.
