This position serves as Soil Conservationist to the assigned field office. The incumbent assists the supervisory district conservationist in assisting the cooperators in the assigned work area and in carrying out an effective, coordinated and sound conservation program.

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
The duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Directs assigned phases of the operations of the field office and provides technical assistance to individuals and groups of farmers in the development, application, and maintenance of soil and water conservation plans.
- Assists in the analysis of workloads, the development of the business plan, and the establishment of goals in line with needs, available manpower, and other resources.
- Participates in performing follow-up and maintenance program on the farms of district cooperators and a periodic review of farm plans and progress made in applying conservation practices.
- Performs duties related to the Farm Bill programs for which NRCS has administrative or technical responsibility.
- Contributes effectively to the development of a balanced information program designed to keep people residing within the district informed of the need for progress in natural resource conservation.
- Recommends the modification and revision of technical guides and job sheets applicable to operations in the field office.
- Contributes to the promotion of a coordinated approach to the identification and solution of problems which hamper the full development of human and natural resources in the rural sectors of the work area.
- Provides leadership and guidance for the understanding and application of personnel rules and regulations.
