Job Opportunity: Public Programs Coordinator, Great Lakes Aquarium (Duluth, MN)

The public programs coordinator will join our education team in delivering public and youth programming on-site, as outreach and online. Programming ranges from roving interpretation, 20 minute informational sessions, hour-long classes for all ages, field interpretation and interactive video conferencing. This position requires some handling and feeding of live animals including reptiles, fish, insects and birds. Understanding of or willingness to learn about Great Lakes issues, cultural and natural history is essential. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Develop and provide programs in all areas of Aquarium education including:

• Interpretive programs on exhibit floor for all ages with live animals;

• On-site instruction for youth ages 3-18;

• Outreach programming for youth and families;

• Special focus and responsibility for the development and delivery of interpretive, outreach, and interactive video conferencing programs.

2. Assist in exhibit and teaching material maintenance.

3. Remain current on relevant scientific and cultural topics.

4. Maintain a safe, inclusive and empowering environment for visitors and staff.

5. Opportunities to SCUBA dive if certified and/or willing to certify.

6. All other job related functions as assigned by supervisor.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Applicants must have working knowledge of PCs and software applications including Microsoft Office Suite, Google on-line tools and internet research. Successful candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. In addition, individuals must have ability to work in a team environment and with minimal supervision.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

• Bachelor degree in Education, Humanities, Environmental Education, Natural Sciences or related field.

• Minimum of three years experience working in non-formal or formal education setting.

• Experience working with K-12 educators, academic standards and curriculum.

• Experience delivering interactive video conferencing programs.

• Current CPR and First Aid certification or ability to certify.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and/or WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, employee may be required to work in both an indoor and outdoor setting. Must have a flexible schedule for overnight, weekend, holiday shifts and extra hours as education events require.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS: $12/hour. Health and dental insurance. 401-K retirement plan. Paid
