Position Title:  Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Preparation), GS-0462-05

 

Tour of Duty:  Permanent seasonal (13/13).

 

Duty Station:   Ketchikan, Alaska

 

Description of Duties:  The successful candidate will be responsible for performing timber sale preparation duties, including: harvest unit boundary determination and layout, harvest unit boundary traversing, determination and layout of road locations, and timber cruising and marking according to established guidelines.  The employee should be capable of taking and recording tree measurements and determining quality and defect, and will be expected to work toward certification as a qualified Region 10 timber cruiser.

 

Additional duties will include participation in silvicultural aspects of timber resource management such as stand exams, stocking surveys, and tree planting.

 

The successful candidate should have working knowledge of forest practices and techniques, including map reading, GPS and compass use, aerial photograph interpretation, tree species identification, and application of silvicultural prescriptions.

 

  • Work requires performing demanding fieldwork in mountainous terrain and inclement weather.  The position also requires a valid state driver’s license.

 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Persons interested in this position must meet the qualification requirements for the GS-0462 series that are covered by the Forestry Technician position standards.  The OPM Qualification Standards Handbook is available for review at any federal personnel office or online at http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/index.htm.

Qualifications and time-in grade requirements must be met within 60 calendar days of the closing date of the announcement.
