Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The NC State University’s Center for Marine Sciences and Technology, located in Morehead City, NC (www.cmast.ncsu.edu/) facilitates research, teaching, and extension activities in marine sciences.

Essential Job Duties

The position is for a Research Technician, whose principal duty station will be CMAST in Morehead City, NC. Duties will include day-to-day management of field and laboratory based research program in Marine Ecology and Conservation. This position will actively participate in multiple research projects for sampling and data collection for various sea life and organisms. This position will be responsible for launching technical and scientific equipment, to include mooring equipment and data collecting devices. The position will identify species and take extensive measurements for data collection and analysis. This position will serve as a mentor for both undergraduate and graduate students providing field training on techniques and procedures, taxonomic enumeration of marine organisms, guidance on sampling collections and data recording, and serving as a content expert for general and technical assistance. This position will be extensively involved in collecting and maintaining data from sea samplings, using statistical and graphics software for data analyses and modeling. The position will then draft reports illustrating the data, and drawing conclusions about trends when communicating results. Work locations can range from the deep sea, to the Florida Keys, to the Pamlico Sound.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Duties will include day-to-day laboratory management, training and assisting students, data management and analysis, organizing and maintaining data, planning and participation in field research for marine ecology and conservation research program.

40% time-Supervision of day-to-day management of research program, training, and assisting students.

30% time-Participation in field research for marine ecology and conservation research program, including panning and purchasing of supplies and equipment, maintenance of equipment and supervision of students.

30% time-Data entry, management and statistical analyses.

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Departmental Required Skills

Experience in:

Management of a research program, benthic sampling techniques and sample preservation

Invertebrate identification, field research planning and shipboard operations

Computer literacy and data management and analysis

Small boat handling and trailering, and constructing

Maintaining marine aquaria

Must be able to travel at least 8-10 weeks during the year.

The technician will be expected to successfully complete a Coast Guard boating safety course. No

other formal training is necessary.

 

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

B.S. or M.S. in a Natural Science

At least 2 years experience in management of a research program, benthic sampling techniques and sample preservation, invertebrate identification, field research planning and shipboard operations, computer literacy and data management and analysis, and experience with small boat handling and

trailering, and constructing and maintaining marine aquaria.

Required License or Certification

SCUBA certification is required at time of start date.

A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 60 days of start date.
