POSITION INFORMATION:
Major duties of these positions are to support the mission of the Forest Service through supporting district operations in recreation, wildlife, and timber. Duties would include activities such as:
–Serve as Forest Protection Officer, Fee Collection Officer, and Contracting Officer Representative
–Maintain GIS databases and producing GIS maps for recreation, wildlife, and timber projects
–Maintaining and operating recreation facilities both dispersed and developed
–Monitor and maintain water control structures for wetland habitat management
–Wildlife management (hogs, deer, turkey, squirrel, bear, and waterfowl) and completing wildlife surveys (especially waterfowl). This may include habitat work, food plot maintenance and trapping.
–Ability to operate farm tractors and equipment
–Observes and reports areas of possible archaeological significance, sightings of sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife or plant species, or notes other areas of interest
–Assists in fire suppression assignments as qualified
–Attain and/or maintain timber marker certification
–Participate in other aspects of resource management support work such as special uses, maintenance, lands, and engineering
–At the GS-06 or 07 grade levels, demonstrates ability to work independently and proficiently in the above duties
The Delta Ranger District on the National Forests in Mississippi currently share and zone many of their resources across district boundaries. The incumbent may serve on several teams that work to advance goals across all National Forests in Mississippi; therefore, work may include working across program areas and district boundaries, working in all resource areas, and some weekend work.
The National Forests in Mississippi is looking for a hardworking, team-oriented individual who has a love for working outdoors and improving the quality and management of the natural resources. This position will work as a team, led by the Supervisory Wildlife Biologist, to implement the recreation and wildlife program on the Delta Ranger District. The position will be directly supervised by the Supervisory Wildlife Biologist on the Delta Ranger District. When not working on wildlife, recreation, or timber projects this position will join in with other resource area employees to accomplish important work for the improvement or protection of the natural resources on other districts in Mississippi. Incumbent must be capable of working outside in hot, humid conditions and endure a number of biting insects.
DISTRICT INFORMATION
The Delta Ranger District works together as one team to advance the mission of the Forest Service through their contributions for the National Forests in Mississippi. All employees work in concert as evident from their strong work relationships, safety and caring, high level of communication, helpful spirit of service, and drive to achieve excellent results.
The Delta Ranger District is located in the western-central part of Mississippi. Delta National Forest (district) is the only bottomland hardwood forest in the nation. It consists of one ecological community type- the Lower Mississippi River Bottomland and Floodplain Forest. The district program management emphasis is on wildlife habitat management (especially waterfowl) and enhancement of forest health to achieve desired structural conditions for the ecological system. The Delta National Forest contains over 60,000 acres of bottomland hardwoods and associated wetlands. On an annual basis the Forest manages about 10,000 acres of forested wetland habitat primarily for wintering waterfowl; maintains a recreation program with 57 campsites, 2 recreation areas and over 45 miles of ATV or multiple use trails; and harvests over 3 million board feet of timber.
Team members are directly responsible for the management of the resources, goods, and services on these
60,000 acres of National Forest System lands in west central Mississippi.
