The San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research has an immediate opening for a full-time Researcher to lead and grow an initiative devoted to addressing the human dimensions of conservation in our conservation projects around the world. We are specifically seeking candidates with broad and diverse experience in the social sciences that will enhance the Institute’s research and outreach effectiveness both locally and globally in engaging people with conservation projects occurring near them. Candidates with experience in conservation education, community-based conservation, sustainable development, socioeconomic aspects of conservation/development, environmental psychology, and political ecology are encouraged to apply. The position will report to the Director of our Conservation Education Division and will also collaborate with associated staff to help evaluate our educational offerings.
Must be an experienced researcher with experience and interest in working as a member of an applied, multidisciplinary, science-based research team. Desirable is a history of building conservation partnerships and collaborating with government agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions.
Extensive opportunities exist for collaboration with a dynamic research team that includes the Institute’s divisions of Applied Animal Ecology, Applied Plant Ecology, Behavioral Ecology, Genetics, Reproductive Physiology, and Wildlife Disease Laboratories. We are the largest zoo-based, multidisciplinary research and wildlife conservation team in the world and are currently working in 35 countries on over 100 conservation projects.
The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic research and education team at the Institute’s Beckman Center for Conservation Research in Escondido, California. The Conservation Education Division includes an established Conservation Education Laboratory, seven full time staff, and is part of the larger Institute for Conservation Research that has over 150 full time staff.
Candidates must have a Ph.D in a relevant discipline (e.g., anthropology, social sciences, psychology); a minimum of three years working on social sciences in a field setting; a proven track record in publishing and presenting research results. Ideally candidates will have postdoctoral experience, supervisory management experience, and a proven track record in obtaining extramural funding. Proficiency in a second language (English being first), preferably Spanish, is desirable. The successful candidate is expected to build and maintain a highly productive research program.
