The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area (CRGNSA) is conducting an outreach to assess interest in this unique opportunity.
The incumbent represents the CRGNSA Forest Service throughout the National Scenic Area as a Field Ranger, part of the Region 6 Valuing People and Places program. The goal of this special Field Ranger program is to help strengthen understanding of the relationship between resources and the environment by instilling place-based messages about how nature matters and nature provides while also connecting with people in communities to find the greatest good.
The incumbent will work for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area with responsibility for leading and supervising the Field Ranger crew, presenting Interpretation at sites, focusing on noteworthy natural and cultural histories as well as stewardship of public lands and personal safety issues.
The CRGNSA has extensive partnerships to deliver interpretive programs throughout the Gorge. The incumbent will provide support to assist in the development and evaluation of the overall Field Ranger program. The duty station is located in Hood River, Oregon.
The National Scenic Area is a 292,000 acre congressionally designated area encompassing the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. The USDA Forest Service has the federal role of implementing the National Scenic Act while protecting and enhancing the Columbia River Gorge. This responsibility is done in partnership with the Columbia River Gorge Commission, the states of Oregon and Washington and Gorge counties. With only 30% of the land area in federal ownership, implementing the National Scenic Area Act is a challenging and unique role for the Forest Service.
The Scenic Area office has about 45 permanent employees, with a seasonal staff of about 25.
