2 field technician will be hired to assist graduate student at Colorado State University in summer data collection. Project will examine the effects of glacier loss on riparian & wetland ecosystems in Glacier National Park, MT. Field technician will assist in the establishment & monitoring of field sites. Dates: July 28-Aug 28.
*Note: There is an additional opportunity for one technician to work on a project in Colorado before and after starting work in Glacier National Park.
Work in Colorado starts in mid-June and end in mid-Sept. This project assesses wetlands throughout the mountains of Colorado and requires travel throughout the southern Rocky Mountains.
Glacier National Park technician duties include conducting stream channel cross section surveys, collecting soil, water, and plant samples, digging and establishing ground water wells, testing water chemistry, installation of stream temperature loggers and ground water monitoring loggers, and performing supportive tasks (collecting data, and observing and measuring vegetation, soils, and hydrology). This requires working long days (10+ hrs) outdoors, and extensive back country travel. Field sites are often remote and require travel off trail and camping in wilderness areas for up to 7 nights. Some data entry and maintenance of field equipment will be required.
Colorado technician field duties are similar and include identifying wetland sites using hydrologic, soil, and vegetation characteristics. Technicians will describe hydrologic conditions, examine soil texture and color for variance in water table levels, identify plant species, and perform supportive tasks (collecting data, and observing and measuring vegetation, soils, and hydrology). This requires working long days (sometimes 10+ hrs) outdoors.
Qualifications: Candidates should have strong knowledge of stream hydrology and geomorphology and/or a background (BS degree or currently pursuing adegree) in ecology, biology, natural resource management, range management, forestry, or related major. Should be able to work independently & accomplish tasks at hand. Must be in good physical condition and feel comfortable in the backcountry. Work includes hiking long distances over rugged terrain and carrying a heavy pack (up to and sometimes exceeding 50 lbs). Candidates should be familiar with (or willing to learn) GPS navigation, reading a topo map, and using a radio for communication with park dispatch. Candidate should be familiar with Microsoft office (especially excel).
Salary is $1000-1600/month DOE. Housing is included in Glacier National Park.
