Organizational Summary
The Will Steger Foundation educates and empowers people to engage in solutions to
climate change. Building on the experience of our founder, Will Steger, polar explorer,
science educator, and advocate, the Will Steger Foundation is unique in its approach to
climate change. We recognize that youth will inherit the unparalleled impacts of climate
change and are among our most powerful advocates. We also recognize educators are
critical messengers of climate and energy literacy, and schools and non-formal learning
centers provide powerful examples of sustainability in communities. With these factors
guiding our approach, we are having a tangible impact on addressing climate change
through climate literacy, youth leadership, and citizen engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Will Steger Foundation is hiring a Communications Intern to support our climate
change education and outreach programs. This position will work directly with the
Director of Education, assisting in research and production of a TPT television program
on Minnesota’s Changing Climate. Additionally, this position will be assist in
developing our online engagement and outreach strategies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in development of discussion guide to accompany television program
• Assist in production of television program identifying resources and stories
• Develop a social media strategy
• Build WSF’s online presence through engaging and interactive content
• Monitor and compile daily news coverage of climate change and energy stories
• Research and write content for the website and blog
• Other duties to support WSF’s work overall
We are looking for a social media-savvy, creative individual. This is a learning and
portfolio-building opportunity for a bright and energetic individual looking to pursue a
career nonprofit communications or fundraising field. You’ll join a small staff and be an
integral part of our mission and daily work.
Experience:
To be qualified for this position, candidates must be:
• Pursuing or recently earned a degree in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications,
Journalism, Environmental Science, Nonprofit Management, or related field.
• Passionate and knowledgeable about online communications
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and all major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter,
Linkedin, Hootsuite, etc)
• A strong writer and excellent editing/proof reading skills
• Experienced with writing, photo selection/editing, and other skills related to production
of marketing materials and willing to provide samples of past work
• Detail-oriented and flexible; able to work in fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
• Some knowledge of website editing and content management
• Experience and/or desire to work in climate change education
• Video and interviewing experience
• Ability to analyze content strategy
