ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Government Relations Associate works to build high-level support among partner organizations, community leaders, businesses, political donors and trustees for specific state lobbying, federal lobbying and government grants goals.
Functions include:

  • Influence and build TNC’s relationships with targeted elected officials by activating TNC trustees, donors and other major supporters in Washington State.
  • Engage as primary liaison with key coalitions such as the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition, the Washington Alliance of Land Trusts and the Pacific Coast Joint Venture.
  • Build ongoing and strategic coalitions to further legislative and grants goals, including engaging partners in the legislative process, obtaining letters of support and coordinating diverse interests.
  • Engage with marketing team to build TNC’s organizational profile and procure media to support government relations tactics, including op eds, editorial board meetings and story generation.
  • Work to build support among businesses and business associations in support of TNC policy goals.
  • Advise program staff on coalition building necessary to achieve budget and policy wins at the state and federal level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy or other relevant field and 2 or more years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with state and federal legislative process.
  • Experience navigating conservation-related social and political dynamics in urban and rural regions.
  • Experience coordinating coalitions and collaborating with diverse interests to accomplish shared goals.
  • Experience writing and editing, researching and compiling information from divergent sources.
  • Experience with MS Office, Word, Excel and navigating the Internet.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated success presenting to and communicating with government or legislative staff and/or program leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of interests
  • Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities.  Meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Washington State media markets and a track record of obtaining earned media coverage.
  • Understanding of conservation-related social and political dynamics in different regions of Washington State.
  • Understanding of Washington State conservation funding mechanisms
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
