GHG Inventory Internship Job Description

Thurston Climate Action Team (TCAT) is a non profit based in Olympia, Washington which works with local government jurisdictions, businesses, and other agencies and non-profits to address the challenges of global warming and climate change.  In 2013, TCAT completed the first county-wide, community based greenhouse gas inventory for Thurston County. TCAT wishes to update this inventory annually. This intern will work with one of the TCAT board members to complete an annual update for the inventory and report results to local city and county officials.

Duties:

  • Coordinate with the local utility, various city and county departments and state and federal agencies to collect data necessary to track community GHG emissions for Thurston County.
  • Enter data into GHG calculation spreadsheets, make any needed updates to the spreadsheets necessary for annual update for the inventory.
  • Conduct specific technical research / analyses as directed
  • Create GHG emissions reports and presentations to local government officials and managers, utilizing available tools and protocols.  Assist in presenting this information to local government bodies.
  • Assist in creating and improving data gathering and reporting systems, for regular updates to the inventory and reporting of scorecard data to local governments .
  • Research other climate change science and policy topics as directed.

 

Skills and qualifications:

  • Undergraduate juniors, seniors or graduate students (Majors: Environmental Science, Business, Engineering, Environmental Policy, Chemistry, etc.)
  • Demonstrated interest in climate change issues / environmental management.
  • Expertise in Excel.
  • Strong organization and communication skills.
  • Engineering and statistics background a plus.

 

Start date: October 6, 2014

Time commitment: 10 hours/week (negotiable up to 20 hours/week)

 

 

Duration: 1 school quarter (through December 13, 2014), with possibility of extending for a second quarter
