Organization: Lakeside School

Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for Global Service Learning (GSL) Leaders and Assistant Leaders for trips that will take place in the summer of 2015. (Upper School trips run from June 15 to around July 23; Middle School trips run in June/July/August.)  Lakeside’s Upper School GSL program combines a seven days on-campus pre-trip curriculum program with four weeks of on-site service learning with cultural immersion in mostly rural areas in the developing and near-developing world.  Potential GSL trips for the Upper School (grades 9-12) in the summer of 2015 will be to China, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, India, Nicaragua, Morocco, Senegal, and Thailand, but may include additional sites. Middle School 8th trips, two weeks in length, will go to the Makah Indian Reservation on the Pacific coast of Washington state and Broetje Orchards, located in Prescott, Washington and potentially one other Washington state site.

Responsibilities
GSL project leaders report to Lakeside’s Associate Director of Global Programs and are responsible for planning, organizing, managing, and executing all aspects of the assigned project—before, during, and after travel to the host country—and for successfully delegating tasks to assistant project leaders. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending some pre- and required post-trip meetings;
  • Travel with students and assigned other leaders to, within, and from the project site (obligatory);
  • Facilitating informational and curricular meetings and communications with selected student participants and their families;
  • Participating in a leader training overnight weekend retreat on April 24-25, 2015 (obligatory);
  • Overseeing all aspects of the program on site (travel, home-stay arrangements and adjustment), curriculum, language training;  service working with the partner organization; students health and safety; planning and overseeing daily reflection and curricular meetings;
  • Evaluating the project, submitting written comments on students, and turning in all receipts and a budget report within two week of return.
  • Leaders and Assistant Leaders not residing in the Seattle area will have modified responsibilities and a decreased stipend.

Requirements and Qualifications
Qualified candidates will have experience in leading groups overseas; fluency in target language and time spent in rural areas in the developing world is preferred. Training and/or experience in experiential and/or outdoor education is desirable. A hardy constitution is important and references should speak to the applicant’s integrity, flexibility, and ability to be an effective member of a team. Leaders must be available for one weekend-long leader-training retreat in April (travel to Seattle will be provided at Lakeside’s expense). All applicants must have a college degree; non-Lakeside alumni must be 25 years of age and all applicants will be subject to an employment background check. Required Wilderness First Aid/CPR certification will be covered at Lakeside’s expense if needed.

Successful candidates must satisfactorily complete a nationwide criminal and sex offender background check.

Compensation and Benefits
Lakeside School is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding employees by providing a competitive compensation package. Individuals will receive a stipend that is based on their completion of required pre and post-meetings, training sessions and the assigned trip.  Travel reimbursement will be limited and established prior to position appointment.
