Position Description:
The Thurston County Resource Stewardship Department is seeking a Graduate Intern to draft land use regulation amendments mandated by the state to comply with the Growth Management Act or recent case laws, as well as amendments to solve a significant issue as directed by the Board of County Commissioners. The amendments under review may include: new land use regulations to comply with Initiative – 502, which establishes a statewide licensing and regulatory system for marijuana producers, processors, and retailers; amendments to the Thurston County Critical Areas Ordinance, which designates and protects critical areas; and other land use amendments as directed by the Board of County Commissioners. Intern responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, research and analysis of land use regulations adopted by other jurisdictions, research and analysis of environmental impacts, and review and response to public comment. Intern responsibilities may also include drafting new and amended land use regulations and staff reports for the Planning Commission and Board of County Commissioners.
Intern(s) will gain experience in local government planning and policy development, including local government land use regulation amendment process and requirements. Intern(s) will also gain exposure and experience interpreting and implementing state and local government land use laws and rules.
Internship duties are expected to occur off-site with bi-weekly progress reports and meetings with the assigned supervisor. If the Intern chooses to earn academic credit, the supervisor will submit a written evaluation to TESC faculty, as assigned, at the end of the academic quarter.
