Zero Waste Washington is currently recruiting for a Community Organizer for approximately 500 hours (32 hours/week) to work for four months starting ASAP. $20/hour temporary, contract position. Some work during evenings and/or weekends required, otherwise schedule is flexible.
We are looking for an energetic, self-directed fast learner who works very well independently and is very comfortable talking to people. We prefer someone who is from Federal Way or south King County, or has lived there for a substantial amount of time and knows the area well. Ability to speak another language (particularly Spanish, Russian, or Korean) is a plus. This is a contract position.
About us: Zero Waste Washington is a small but effective grassroots organization that has been the catalyst for breakthrough recycling and waste reduction programs and legislation in Washington State for 32 years. We are the public’s voice for recycling and zero waste. Zero Waste Washington protects people and our natural world by advocating for products designed and produced to be healthy, safe, and continually recycled and reused. We use three main strategies to address the root causes of issues: advocating for policy and system changes, engaging people in driving those system changes, and implementing pilot projects to demonstrate that the desired changes are possible.
About the project: Zero Waste Washington is building a Community-Powered Sharing Project in Federal Way or another location in south King County. Imagine a library that lends tools, toys, outdoor gear, or sports gear; a community-determined and community-run project. For this phase of the project, we are talking to people in their neighborhoods to build community involvement, gain community input, and generate leadership for the project.
About you: You need to be comfortable with talking to people you don’t know, one-on-one or in small groups, on the street and at events. It is preferred that you have experience with organizing, particularly one-on-one organizing. You will need to work well independently with minimal supervision. You should be passionate about creating a world that is healthier and more just!
