Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a GIS professional to perform data maintenance on the GIS base layers representing SPU’s Drinking Water infrastructure assets with primary focus on the Water Services data layer. The position will report to the Utility GIS Data Maintenance Supervisor within SPU’s Information Technology Division.

Job Responsibilities

• Create and edit GIS feature classes and tables using an ArcMap-based edit interface

• Perform research utilizing a variety of methods including but not limited to: manuals, documents, field checks, and other self-directed research

• Manage and interpret various source materials such as maps, engineering plans, hand-drawn sketches, legal descriptions, written descriptions of utility locations and on-line research tools

• Perform quality control and spatial analysis

• Perform upkeep of unit tracking systems using MS Access or Excel

• Document procedures and guidelines

• Perform user acceptance testing for data maintenance and end-user tools

• Conduct other self-directed research

• Independently resolve most routine problems while maintaining communication with other team members, supervisors and subject matter experts

• Perform field checks or GPS work as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education

An Associate Degree in Geography, Computer Science, Civil Engineering Technology, or other related field

Equivalency

Other combinations of education and/or experience which provide an equivalent background to perform the work of the class.

Licensing and other requirements

A Washington State Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility

 

Desired Qualifications

• Two years of experience performing GIS data creation and/or maintenance related to utility infrastructure, cadastral data, street networks and/or addresses

• Experience with Esri ArcGIS software suite

• Experience in the interpretation of construction drawings related to utility infrastructure projects

• Familiarity with City of Seattle GIS data models, source materials, and business applications (e.g. Virtual Vault, Maximo, etc.)

• Ability to perform data analysis and global/batch data processing tasks

• Experience with custom user edit interfaces in a deadline-driven environment

• Familiarity with CADD and the principles of surveying

• General field work experience

• The person in this position should be detail-oriented, possess an ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be able to move from assignment to assignment with ease, and possess good problem-solving, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

• Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment and move between assignments with ease
