DESCRIPTION:
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is dedicated to protecting native fish and wildlife, and
providing sustainable fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities for millions of residents and visitors.
Working throughout the state, WDFW’s employees–field biologists, enforcement officers, land stewards, lab
technicians, customer service representatives and others—manage hundreds of fish and wildlife species,
maintain nearly a million acres of public wildlife lands, provide opportunities for recreational and commercial
fishing, wildlife viewing and hunting, protect and restore habitat and enforce laws that protect fish and wildlife
resources.
There is currently a permanent Fish Hatchery Specialist 3 position in the Fish Program, Hatchery Division,
Washougal Complex. The duty station is the Goldendale Hatchery located at 130 Hatchery Lane, Goldendale,
WA 98620-9802.
DUTIES:
Fish Culture
Carries out sound fish culture practices to meet program goals.
Identifies and communicates opportunities to improve fish culture practices.
Projects and monitors fish growth and feed requirements.
Monitors fish behavior and health.
Actively seeks to learn new fish culture practices.
Administers therapeutants, calculates and administers drugs as prescribed.
Monitors egg and fish production
Performs fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and pland
Crew Leader
Carries out assignments as a working leader.
Monitors projects/activities to ensure completion in a timely manner.

Ensures that the staff is productive and well informed on activities.

Physical Operation and Maintenance of Facility
Ensures that working components of the fish hatchery are kept in good condition (i.e. pumps & motors,
vehicles, alarms, generators, flashlights)
Ensures timely repairs to facility and infrastructure.
Maintains the grounds in appearance and upkeep to include seasonal issues.
Identifies and communicates ways to improve the physical plant operation.
Actively identifies safety hazards and takes action or recommends remedies as appropriate.
Communications
Keeps supervisor and management well-informed on production issues that may lead to fish health concerns or
program shortfalls.
Disseminates information from management and supervisor in a positive light that leads to compliance and
team building.
Serves as a conduit for safety concerns (management to staff and staff to management)
Represents the agency professionally and communicates effectively.
Communicates with outside entities to implement agency-approved projects.
Data Collection, Entry and Reporting
Leads others at the facility in collecting, compiling, and reporting all pertinent data
Required by the program, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Maintains a facility filing system that is that is well organized and user-friendly.
Ensures that staff are well informed on where and how to collect and record data.
Leads others in accurately collecting and recording data.
Demonstrates proficiency in use of personal computers and various applications.
Working Conditions
The work hours are normally an 8-hour-day, 5 days per week but can vary according to the needs of the
program and resources. Normally does not exceed 40 hours per week unless emergency conditions exist.
Must be able to lift 50 lb feed sacks on occasions. This position is on-station and standby is assigned. This
position requires a class B CDL with tanker and air-brake endorsement or the ability to obtain within 6
months of employment.
Special Note:
All applicants considering applying for this position should understand and consider that standby is a
requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series. Management may determine it is
necessary to assign it in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to
protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 OR Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or
closely allied field and 5 years of hatchery experience. OR Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field
and 3 years of hatchery experience. OR 7 years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a
hatchery will substitute for the required education. Preferred work experience in a hatchery setting.
Job Knowledge:
Fish Culture techniques
Water dynamics, i.e. Fish requirements for, DO levels, water chemistry, temperature, turbidity
Basic Mathematics
Computer knowledge, spreadsheet formats, word processing programs, E-mail, Word, Excel, and agency
specific applications.
Proper calibration and operation of measuring instruments.
Knowledge of hatchery forms; application and use of key forms; proper procedures, etc..
