Please Respond by February 17th, 2015
The Cottage Grove Ranger District on the Umpqua National Forest will soon be advertising a GS-0430-09 District Botanist position, located in Cottage Grove, OR. This position independently develops plans, organizes and executes the botany program on the Cottage Grove Ranger District. The Botanist is also responsible for the invasive plant program involving seasonal crews, contractors and partnerships with outside groups to accomplish the program of work. The invasive weed program utilizes all tools including the use of herbicides.
The Position
Ø The District Botanist participates on an interdisciplinary team (IDT) to provide the documentation and coordination necessary for the effective management of threatened, endangered, sensitive and invasive botany species. The IDT develops, analyzes and implements landscape level projects that include timber sales and watershed restoration activities. The incumbent works to develop integrated restoration practices by effectively collaborating with other team members.
Ø This is both an office and field position where fieldwork can be physically arduous. The incumbent serves as the work leader for a permanent Biological Technician and collaboratively works in the field to identify relevant botanical species within integrated projects. This position also directly supervises an interdisciplinary four-person temporary seasonal workforce. This team is responsible for a wide variety of projects including noxious weed control, wildlife habitat management, aquatic surveys, and reforestation.
Ø Performs ecosystem restoration including treatment of noxious weeds and other invasive species. Develops and conducts monitoring of restoration and weed treatment activities and coordinates with outside entities in weed treatment efforts. Expectations include ability to serve as a contracting officer representative (COR) on contracts that include herbicide spraying of invasive weeds and become certified as a public applicator of herbicides.
Ø The successful candidate must be especially familiar with botany and mycology, including extensive knowledge of Pacific NW flora, and related ecology, seed collection and nursery propagation and restoration practices; have excellent organization and communication skills, and embrace work in an integrated and interdisciplinary team environment. In addition to having a strong technical proficiency, two key considerations in being selected for this position is the ability to effectively engage with fellow interdisciplinary team members and the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners.
