The Habitat Restoration Program at the Institute for Applied Ecology (www.appliedeco.org) is hiring a full-time restoration ecologist/botanist to lead several different types of restoration and recovery-related projects, including wildlife habitat improvement, monitoring, upland and wet prairie restoration, and investigation of new restoration tools (i.e. grazing), on multiple public and private conservation easement sites. This position will report to the Habitat Restoration Program Director, and work closely with other Habitat Restoration Program project leads and partners, including staff from the Bureau of Land Management, the City of Eugene, U.S. Forest Service and others. Currently, this position works primarily with habitats and species in the lower and central Willamette Valley, although future projects may be located in other regions in Oregon and southwest Washington. This position manages all aspects of restoration planning and implementation, including project development; writing of restoration, planting and management plans; providing contract and budget oversight and communication; coordinating and implementing restoration treatments; operating or supervising the safe operation of equipment; hiring and supervising contractors and work crews; collecting and analyzing data; and writing reports. The Institute for Applied Ecology (IAE) is a dynamic, growing non-profit organization focused on habitat restoration, conservation research and ecological education projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. IAE is located in Corvallis, Oregon (home of Oregon State University), only an hour away from the Oregon Coast and the Cascades. Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Botany, Biology, or related field (Master’s degree preferred). • Experience developing, coordinating, managing, implementing restoration projects. • Experience hiring, coordinating and supervising contractors and paid and/or volunteer work crews. • Experience managing contracts, project budgets and project record keeping. • Experience coordinating and implementing restoration treatments (i.e. mowing, grazing, brush clearing, solarization, herbicide application, burning, planting and seeding). • Experience coordinating seeding and/or outplanting efforts as well as nursery production and acquisition of large quantities of plant materials. • Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of motorized field equipment such as chainsaws, brush mowers, ATVs, weed-eaters, tractors, seeders, etc. • Possession of (or ability to obtain within 6 months) an Oregon commercial pesticide applicator’s license. • Ability to collect, process and analyze data and maintain restoration databases. • Clear, direct communication skills (verbal and written) and good interpersonal skills. • Experience with data collection using a handheld or resource-grade GPS. • Experience navigating in the field using aerial photos, maps, and GPS equipment. • Competent in ArcGIS and Microsoft Office products. • Plant identification skills and experience using technical keys. • Familiarity with Willamette Valley flora and fauna. • Ability to work long hours in adverse weather conditions with potential exposure to poison oak. • Ability to work in a bent-over, kneeling, or standing position for significant periods of time and to hike over uneven terrain for several miles. • Ability to lift at least 40 lbs. • Current U.S. driver’s license. Desired Qualifications: • Familiarity with Oregon threatened and endangered plant and animal species, including their biology, habitat requirements, threats, and recovery goals. • Experience writing grant proposals and technical reports. • Experience assisting with environmental compliance processes, especially those involving threatened and endangered species, and ability to secure permits as needed. • Experience with installation of wildlife structures (e.g., bird boxes and bee blocks). • Comfort with public speaking Compensation: $18.00 – 21.00/hr, depending on experience.
