NATURAL RESOURCE SPECIALIST 1
(Non-Permanent, Part-Time)
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one (1) part-time, non-permanent, Natural Resource
Specialist 1 position located in the Wildlife Program. The duty station for this position is the Oak Creek Wildlife
Area, 16601 US Highway 12 in Naches, Yakima County with work performed primarily to support the wildlife
non-commercial thinning areas. This position’s employment period is anticipated to commence April 15, 2015.
The position is a Project Position, funded by an RCO State Lands Restoration Grant. The position is expected
to be part time (20-30 hours/week) but may work up to 40 hours/week as needed until November 15, 2015.
Under the supervision of the Oak Creek Wildlife Area Forester, this position supports the mission and goals of
the Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) within the constraints of policy and applicable legal requirements
by implementing forest management activities on the Oak Creek Wildlife Area. The incumbent will assist the
Oak Creek Wildlife Area Forester in prioritizing and implementing forest health improvement on the Oak Creek
Forest Restoration Project.
DUTIES:
Conducting and/or overseeing of stand assessments;
Conducting and/or overseeing prescribed burning operations.
Locating and marking thinning unit boundaries;
GPS mapping; using compass and pacing skills to establish sample plots;
Measuring sample trees within plots;

Recording tree species and sample data on plot cards, and recording stand/field plot observations;
Assist with the preparation of contracts for non-commercial thinning;
Plan and track activities on the Oak Creek Wildlife Area to assist the Forester in future forest planning
efforts.
Assess the health of the stand post treatment/assessment and recommend silvicultural prescriptions and
harvest strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field and two years’ professional
experience;
OR
A two year Associate Degree in Forestry or a closely related Natural Resource field and four years’
professional experience.
Experience is based on full time equivalency (i.e., 40 or more hours/week). Part time work is prorated (e.g., 20
hours/week for 6 years = 3 years of experience). Do not count experience that was a part of your educational
requirements.
*College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences,
or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided course work includes at
least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
A valid Washington or other State Driver’s License
First Aid (training provided)
ATV certification (training provided)
Knowledge and experience with timber sales and silviculture treatments
Knowledge of forest practices requirements for eastern Washington;
Knowledge of contracting procedures;
Proficient at using GPS equipment to map unit boundaries;
Proven experience with computer based GIS programs such as ArcGIS;
Ability to work independently or as part of a team on assigned tasks;
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software programs including Word and Excel.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Working knowledge of the Oak Creek Forest Restoration Project.
Professional experience in Washington’s eastside forests.
One year experience in eastside timber cruising.
Experience with Forest Vegetation Simulator.
Experience in eastside silviculture prescription development.
Training in timber sale preparation and documentation.
Experience conducting prescribed burning operations.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Working Conditions
Position is located at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area Headquarters Office in Naches. Position is a combination of
office and field work. Incumbent must be willing to work alone and traverse steep, uneven terrain in all
weather conditions. The employee is expected to spend their time working in the field under sometimes difficult
conditions. Weather conditions can vary from freezing to over 100 degrees F, and terrain is steep and rocky.
Other hazards include poisonous reptiles, insects and plants. Employees must be capable of lifting and
carrying up to 50 pounds over steep, rugged terrain in hot or cold weather.

Position requires the ability to drive a vehicle on primitive roads during all weather conditions in 4 wheel drive
trucks and ATV’s. Incumbent utilizes agency radio equipment and/or cell phone for communication in the field.
Office duties require use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g. desks, files, cabinets, computers,
telephones, fax machines, copy machines, etc.). Field duties require frequent use of GPS, topographic maps,
aerial photos, compass, clinometer, diameter, and basal area measurment tools. Field duties also require use
of hand and motor-driven cutting equipment such as axes, saws and chainsaws.
Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of
Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP). As a condition
