The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is recruiting and filling Lead Forestry Technician Handcrew Squad leader positions across the Forest, as PSE 13/13 appointments. These positions will be located, one each, in the following locations: Applicants need to indicate one of the locations below as one of their geographic locations in order to be considered for these positions. About the Position
The position is located on a wildland fire crew. This position performs wildland firefighting work and to lead crews performing such work. These may be hand crews (e.g. non-IHC handcrews), and/or prescribed fire crews. These crews perform work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning.
PERMANENT OPEN CONTINUOUS RECRUITMENT: This is a continuously open vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs. These are permanent positions with varying tours of duty and may include weekend work. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time (guaranteed minimum 13 pay period’s full-time employment). Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:
Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in the online application or resume.
Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
For the GS-05 position, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-04: During initial attack fire suppression activities and performs prescribed fire operations, locates fireline, directs and participates in fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine and pump operations, tree falling and holding/patrol/mop up operations, ignition, monitoring, monitors fire behavior, fire effects and fire weather, constructs handlines in various vegetative types, uses a variety of specialized tools, equipment and techniques to actively suppress fires and firing equipment, and provides leadership and training for the crewmembers; maintains work notes and records, reports on performance problems and issues.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
•Primary NWCG Core Requirements: Firefighter Type 1 – FFT1 – Qualified
•Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
•Must meet Maximum Entry Age (MEA) requirements.
•Primary firefighter retirement covered position.
•Must meet FS-FPM qualifications.
•Must possess and maintain a Valid Driver’s License.
•Position requires a Work Capacity Test (WCT).
•Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with the Selective Service.
•U.S. Citizenship Required.
