The Trail Builder/Crew Leader is responsible for planning, organizing and leading volunteer trail work parties and for performing independent trail construction work. While most work parties occur on weekends, weekday evening work parties are also important. And we’re looking for the best since this position requires strong trail building, communication and volunteer organizational skills, and the ability to effectively lead a crew to complete a trail work project. Evergreen’s Mission:
Evergreen is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that creates and protects sustainable mountain biking opportunities in Washington.
Summary of Position:
The Trail Builder/Crew Leader is responsible for planning, organizing and leading volunteer trail work parties and for performing independent trail construction work. Spring work will take place at Duthie Hill, Black Diamond Open Space and Tiger Mountain. By summer, project sites could also include North Bend, Tacoma and/or Skykomish. Work will occur on weekdays and weekends. This position requires strong trail building, communication and volunteer organizational skills, and the ability to effectively lead a crew to complete a trail work project. Passion for mountain biking and the outdoors is a must. Excavator operation and project management skills a plus. Position reports to Evergreen’s Project Manager.
Responsibilities:
- Work with Evergreen PM, Lead Builders and Land Managers to complete trail construction and maintenance activities, and to establish work party schedule, logistics, plans and objectives.
- Coordinate with other Evergreen staff and volunteers to secure volunteer participation.
- Safely motivate and lead crews of volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds.
- Ensure work is performed according to objectives and standards.
- Manage equipment, tools, refreshments, sign-in sheets, waivers and logistics for work parties.
- Represent Evergreen & the sport of mountain biking in a positive, professional manner at all times.
Qualifications:
- Strong trail building skills and keen understanding of IMBA Trails Solutions and USFS Standards.
- Ability to effectively lead a crew to complete a trail work project.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; friendly, outgoing, motivating, and professional.
- Ability to work with minimal oversight.
- A high level of strength is not necessary but endurance and fitness are critical.
- Tolerance for discomfort. Work happens even in cold and wet weather and the ability to maintain team spirit in those conditions is important.
- Basic proficiency with Word, Excel and Email.
- Valid driver’s license, clean driving record and reliable personal vehicle.
- Excavator operation experience and project management skills a plus.
Classification: Non-exempt. Hours: Flexible. Min: 1 weekend work party per week. Max: 40 hrs/week.
Compensation: Pay commensurate with qualifications.
Performance Review: Evergreen will conduct annual performance evaluations.
