Intern: Knotweed Survey Internship in the Skokomish Watershed, Mason Conservation District (Shelton, WA)

SUMMER INTERN (PAID, TEMPORARY)
Skokomish Watershed, Shelton, WA
Closes: Open until all positions are filled

Duration: Mid-June thru Mid-September (dates flexible)

The Skokomish River in Mason County is the largest river flowing into Hood Canal. The watershed covers about 240 square miles with 80 miles of mainstem and over 260 miles of tributaries. The river supports populations of ESA listed Puget Sound Chinook, winter steelhead, and Bull Trout as well as healthy populations of Fall Chum and Coho.

A complex series of factors has resulted in the degradation of habitat, water quality, and river processes, including a critical infestation of invasive plant species, primarily knotweed.  Since 2009, the Mason Conservation District (MCD) has been leading riparian restoration efforts in the watershed which include: 1) identifying, tracking, and recording data on knotweed; 2) treating and eradicating known knotweed infestations; and 3) re-planting and maintaining the treated areas with native vegetation.

MCD is currently seeking 3-4 summer interns to work together in conducting knotweed surveys within the watershed.  Intern responsibilities will include navigating through riparian habitat using a handheld GPS device equipped with ArcPad to flag transects lines and collect data on knotweed.  Interns will collect GPS points and associated knotweed infestation attributes that include: average height, approximate stem count, and approximate area of knotweed patch.  No experience with knotweed and/or ArcGIS software is necessary.  Interns will be representing the Mason Conservation District and are expected to professionally communicate with members of the community.

Please note: As a field position, you must be comfortable navigating through sometimes dense vegetation on difficult terrain, during inclement weather.

Compensation: $12/hr
