University of Washington‐Mount Rainier Institute EE Instructor
In partnership with Mount Rainier National Park, University of Washington has created the Mount
Rainier Institute. Mount Rainier Institute is a new residential environmental education program. Our
mission is to provide outstanding nature‐based education experiences that are rooted in science and
nurture the next generation of environmental stewards and leaders. We are looking for skilled
educators to help establish a solid program with one of the nation’s iconic National Parks.
Environmental Education Instructors are key members of the program staff. They will instruct youth and
adults regarding the diversity of ecosystems, plants and animals, and cultural history of the Pacific
Northwest. EE Instructors will also have the opportunity for professional growth through the
development of their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills and techniques.
This is an excellent opportunity to be part of starting a new residential environmental education
program.
Term of Position: Spring season is late August through November 6th, may involve weekend and evening
hours. Shared housing will be provided along with meals when groups are in residence. First Aid and
CPR training will be provided for individuals who do not have these certifications.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Lead students through Mount Rainier Institute programs in natural and cultural history, inquirybased
field investigations, and resource stewardship for youth and adults; primarily students in
grades 4‐12.
• Lead half‐day and day‐long educational hikes (including using snowshoes) on Pack Forest and
Mount Rainier National Park trails.
• Assist in the design of customized environmental and science education programs for students
of all ages.
• Attend training and regularly scheduled staff meetings.
• Ensure safety and well‐being of program participants.
• Conduct evening and weekend programs as needed.
• Assist in the maintenance of all program supplies, equipment, and facilities.
• Assist with other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS:
• BA/BS in Natural Sciences, Biology, Education, Parks and Recreation Management,
Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, Resource Interpretation, Natural Resources,
Outdoor or Environmental Education, or related field.
• Previous teaching/working with children.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and hike several miles.
• Great independent worker and team player.
DESIRED:
• Extensive experience in classroom teaching, outdoor education, residential camp setting, nature
center, or day camp.
• Experience facilitating inquiry‐based scientific field studies for middle and high school students.
• Knowledge of the natural history of the Pacific Northwest and snow science.
• Ability to speak Spanish.
COMPENSATION:
$1864‐1900 per month (prorated). Shared housing and meals when groups are in residence.
