Marine Mammal Stranding Americorps Position – Puget Sound, WA

The Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center of Highline College is a community-focused marine and environmental education center located in central Puget Sound. For the last seven years we have been the primary environmental education resource for our community, Highline College students and local K-12 school districts. Our mission is to foster a culture of marine stewardship by engaging our community through interactive learning, personal relations and exploration. This AmeriCorps member will lead our volunteer Marine Mammal Stranding Team. They will recruit and educate volunteers, provide public training and organize responses to stranding calls. Strandings are very seasonal, therefore this Member will also assist with local and regional educational outreach events and give stewardship-focused presentations. Environmental outreach projects that engage multiple segments of the community will be focused by personal relevance. There will be ample opportunity to get out into the community to connect with children, adults and seniors around issues affecting Puget Sound and its inhabitant populations. This Member will recruit, train and track citizen involvement with current projects and develop new projects involving citizens in environmental awareness and stewardship.

Duties include: recruit, train and communicate with Marine Mammal Stranding Response Team; deliver informational presentations relating to marine/environmental stewardship and marine mammal interactions; maintain Stranding Team records; assist with marine mammal necropsies; track and organize supplies for outreach and Stranding Team; assist with educational outreach events and senior continuing education presentations; provide leadership and mentorship of volunteers; provide community education through interpretation of exhibits, community outreach and mentoring; assist in maintenance, aquaculture and animal husbandry in the aquarium; develop and implement an educational or activity project in line with the organization’s mission and individual interests.
