POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) provides a reliable water supply to more than 1.3 million customers in the Seattle metropolitan area, essential sewer, drainage, solid waste and engineering services that safeguard public health, maintain the city’s infrastructure and protect, conserve and enhance the region’s environmental resources.

SPU is seeking a Drainage and Wastewater (DWW) Capital Projects Coordinator (35-month temporary assignment) to perform project management duties for projects of moderate size and scope within its Project Delivery Branch and assist other staff in project management tasks. This position reports to the Supervising Civil Engineer in the DWW Management Section and will assist in project implementation and coordination of managing capital improvement projects from initiation through closeout.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

This temporary position will project project management task support to SPU Project Management Division Supervising Civil Engineer to deliver projects assigned to the group. This section is responsible for managing the design and implementation of highly complex, high cost, strategic departmental projects. Tasks will include, but are not limited to:

  • Task management in project management of projects including the 10th Avenue NE Culvert Replacement and 11th Avenue NE Drainage Improvements, and direct support of other projects that may be assigned to the section.
  • Coordinate the work of multidisciplinary teams of staff from SPU and consultants
  • Lead teams and work closely with field units,engineering, environmental, finance and management personnel to coordinate initiation, planning, design, construction and close out phases
  • Facilitate project meetings and distribute minutes to applicable stakeholders
  • Support the development, tracking and reporting of the projects’ scopes, schedules and budgets
  • Assist in managing project risk and preparing project management plans and change management documents
  • Assist with acquiring environmental and interagency permits
  • Assist with contract and agency negotiations
  • Assist managing consultant and contractor contracts
  • Resolve moderately complex design, technical, labor resource, budget and project implementation issues
  • Assist with developing presentations to a wide range of audiences including community members, tribes, SPU executives and staff and other key stakeholders
QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

  • Three years of project management or general engineering design experience with medium complex public utility projects or related field.
  • The equivalent of a Bachelors Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Business Administration,Urban Planning or related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the designated work)

Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time

Licensing and Other Requirements:

  • A valid current Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility. The successful applicant will be required to provide a current complete Washington  driver record as condition of employment

Desired Qualifications/Experience:

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills
  • Experience with a government organization is strongly desired
  • Demonstrated proficiency using MS Office (Project, Powerpoint, Excel, Word)
  • Proven leadership skills including listening, communicating, negotiating and collaboratively making decisions in a timely manner
  • Experience using SPU Project Management Methodology an/ior Project Management Body of Knowledge Guidelines
  • Ability to initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control, and close projects
  • Ability to adapt to changes and multi-task
  • Willingness and desire to learn
