Job Description:
The Program Manager, Sustainability Solutions Learning Projects will coordinate, organize and manage project activity related to matching academic opportunities with partner organizations (public, private and NGOs), to ensure that students maximize their educational experience and produce high-quality deliverables. Projects will be completed through workshop classes as well as individual and group culminating experiences for Master’s (and some Honors) students. Sustainability Solutions Learning is the School of Sustainability’s unique approach to problem and project-based learning. Top goals include: (1) provide students with a real-world project to investigate; (2) apply concepts learned in the classroom to solutions; and (3) provide valuable service to an organization. The Program Manager will mentor and guide students through the process of their culminating experience projects, particularly those of the Master of Sustainability Solutions (MSUS) degree who do a project rather than a thesis as their culminating experience. The process includes a course in Project Management during their first year, and a course for finalizing all deliverables for Applied Project in their second year. The position will report to the School of Sustainability’s Curriculum Developer.
The Program Manager – Sustainability Solutions Learning Projects will work with multiple sustainability units at ASU to cultivate, grow and support projects that will benefit students and the community.
The School of Sustainability wishes to build upon our existing Sustainability Solutions Learning Program. The Program Manager – Sustainability Solutions Learning Projects will be responsible for creating closer ties between ASU and other University-based networks incorporating applied projects or service-learning for sustainability, in partnership with the Sustainable Cities Network here in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability (ASU Wrigley Institute). We see the potential for this program to grow through the development of ongoing relationships with a wide variety of organizations from local to global focusing on high-value sustainability-informed outcomes.
Essential Duties:
- Develop and grow the portfolio of projects available to students (and groups of students), especially those in the Master of Sustainability Solutions (MSUS) degree
- Lead the evaluation and approval of student projects by the MSUS Committee and be the point-person to lead the administration of MSUS Committee meetings, in communication with the Graduate Coordinator
- Provide oversight and connectivity across projects, key constituencies, and Sustainability units at ASU
- Enhance and expand the Sustainability Connect website in cooperation with our communications team
- Help to make matches between students, faculty and project opportunities
- Establish and maintain liaison with local, regional, state, and national organizations (Public, private, NGOs) who may provide future projects, and guide long-term projects through several consecutive teams of students
- Mentor students throughout the process of their culminating experience projects
- Lead (or co-teach) Project Management class (SOS 582)
- Lead Applied Project class (SOS 593)
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field AND five years administrative/coordination experience; OR, Master’s degree in field appropriate to area of assignment AND three years administrative/coordination experience; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.Desired Qualifications:
Experience in:
- Developing, planning, budgeting, implementing and evaluating small and large scale projects
- Working with a municipal administrations or other types of organizations, especially on sustainability programs or projects
- Working in an academic environment with senior level administrators, faculty, and students
- Supervising or directing the work of others, including students
- Creating or managing a project plan, developing a budget; creating RFPs and contracts or MOUs
- Teaching/mentoring in a higher education setting
- Building relationships with partner organizations
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and facilitating work teams
- Using verbal and written presentation skills
- Using organizational skills to manage several activities at once
Demonstrated knowledge of:
- Sustainability challenges and solutions pathways
- University-community engagement, service learning or engaged scholarship
- Project management tools and software
- ASU and/or the School of Sustainability at ASU
Working Environment:
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse
- Stand for varying lengths of time, and walk moderate distances to perform work
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
- Communicate to perform essential functions of the job
- Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals
- This position receives annual managerial review of objectives
