Portland Parks and Recreation Rangers serve as goodwill ambassadors and provide a positive presence in Portland Parks and Recreation facilities. Rangers serve multiple roles by providing information, helping solve park user conflicts, and enforcing City Code. The Ranger Supervisor is an integral part of this team and oversees seasonal and full time rangers, as well as parking enforcement staff.

The supervisor plans, trains, schedules and supervises staff as well as creates, monitors and implements the program work plan. S/he makes policy and procedural changes, develops and monitors standard operating procedures, leads training committee efforts, and sets expectations/guidelines for staff.

The supervisor establishes performance benchmarks and ensures compliance with City Charter, Code, and Human Resources polices and labor contract provisions. Other duties of the supervisor include monitoring performance, resolving community complaints, attending and presenting at multiple meetings, inventory and purchase of equipment, uniforms and supplies. The supervisor must be able to work under limited direction and make daily decisions related to security issues. S/he must be a skilled problem solver with background in conflict management, public safety, and community outreach.

An ideal candidate is someone who cares about parks, nature and people; has a background in parks and public safety; and is inclusive and culturally competent. The supervisor provides leadership to multiple staff, community groups, and PP&R stakeholders, as such s/he must be able to lead by example, be accountable, transparent, compassionate and service-oriented.
