PARKS AND VISITOR SERVICES MANAGER
Metro, Portland, Oregon
Closes: Monday January 11, 2016 at 5:00 pm

Salary: $91,887.00 – $130,519.00 Annually

We’re looking for an experienced professional to oversee the management of a growing regional system that currently includes 15 outdoor destinations across the greater Portland region. Our diverse portfolio includes nature parks, boat ramps, historic cemeteries, trails, large picnic areas, rental facilities and more. As the elected regional government, Metro began operating parks 25 years ago by agreeing to take on Multnomah County’s park and historic cemetery sites, which included Oxbow and Blue Lake regional parks, Glendoveer Golf Course, 14 historic cemeteries and other properties. Over the past two decades, the region’s voters have passed two bond measures and an operating levy to grow and operate a regional park system.

As Metro continues to acquire land and restore habitat, we are also opening additional sites for public access and improving existing destinations to make them safer, cleaner, more attractive and more fun for visitors. That means adding overflow parking, replacing aging restrooms, transforming a park entry, upgrading signage, renovating buildings and much more. With all this growth and change underway, it’s an exciting time to join Metro Parks and Nature – a newly formed department that brings together related program areas into a cohesive system.

You would report to the Director of Visitor Services and lead a team of approximately 16 full-time staff and a variety of seasonal staff. Direct reports include two operations supervisors, an arborist, a maintenance technician and a guest relations and services staff person. The two operations supervisors manage a team of park rangers and lead park rangers, in addition to a large number of seasonal park workers.

We’re looking for a strong leader who knows a lot about park operations and maintenance, customer service, project management and budgeting. We hope that you’re passionate about parks and nature in general, and Metro’s portfolio in particular. We’re also looking for a progressive leader who is committed to helping Metro welcome and serve the diverse communities who enjoy our parks.

Across the region Metro is restoring habitat, improving parks for visitors, opening new sites, expanding opportunities to volunteer and learn about nature, and supporting community projects. Several new initiatives are designed to better serve residents who traditionally have missed out on the benefits of nature, including people of color and low-income communities. The Parks and Visitor Services Manager is responsible for leading the Parks and Visitor Services team as we extend our Parks system to provide fun, safe and interesting places for people to connect with nature.
