Opportunity for a communications student to work with Washington Department of Ecology’s Spill Prevention, Preparedness and Response Program to support internal and external activities related to communicating about oil spills.
Ideally, the student would have strong writing and editing skills, and be proficient with Microsoft Office software. Web and graphic skills would be a bonus but are not a necessity. The student would have the opportunity to learn about and contribute to the work of the program and would be included in team meetings.
Typical tasks may include:
- Drafting stories/ developing content regarding the work of the Spills program for Inside Ecology (Ecology’s intranet) and the Washington Oil Observer newsletter
- Assisting in editing documents related to oil spills (news releases, talking points, newsletter articles)
- Create a process to easily quantify quarter-end performance measures (i.e. tracking for number of media contacts; news releases sent; social media stats, etc.)
- Clean up and organize current Spills Sharepoint Site (requires basic Web skills we can teach if necessary)
- Reorganize incident management pages on the Spills Website (requires basic Web skills we can teach if necessary)
- Document on call and other Spills communication duties for desk and how-to manuals
- Sit in and summarize media interviews for sharing with the rest of the agency
- Assist in ongoing development strategies for PIOs
- Assist in development of formal media interview training for Ecology’s Spills program
This would be a great opportunity for an interested student majoring in communications, journalism, public relations, environmental studies or other closely-related field.
