Case Study:  Alberta’s Oil Sands and the Rights of First Nations Peoples to Environmental Health, by Lori Lambert, Ph.D., D.S.

This case examines health and environmental issues of Alberta’s Cree First Nations and the rights of the Province of Alberta and lease-holders to develop the oil sands to extract petroleum. Although there are many environmental issues associated with the process of extracting the bitumen from the oil tar sands such as climate change, destruction of the boreal forest, and contamination of wetlands and muskegs, this case focuses on the tailings ponds and the environmental health issues that they are causing.

This case is located at:  http://nativecases.evergreen.edu/collection/cases/albertas-oil-sands-and-the-rights-of-first-nations-peoples-to-environmental-health.html

Ken Tabbutt, presenter, is faculty at The Evergreen State College, holds a B.A. in Geology and Biology, from Whitman College, an M.S. in Geology from Dartmouth College, and a Ph.D. in Geology from Dartmouth College.

About Enduring Legacies: Native Cases:

The Enduring Legacies Native Cases Initiative began in 2006 as a partnership between The Evergreen State College, Northwest Indian College, Salish Kootenai College, and Grays Harbor College. Our goal is to develop and widely disseminate culturally relevant curriculum and teaching resources in the form of case studies on key issues in Indian Country.

We are grateful for the support of the Lumina Foundation for Education, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. The support of our Indian Advisory Board is also deeply appreciated. They helped us identify key issues in Indian Country for our cases.
