Reporting to the Chief Facilities Officer, the assistant director of sustainability and energy management provides the expertise and leadership to articulate and assist St. Lawrence University in delivering on its sustainability commitment. This position requires development of near and longer term strategies and implements approved projects and programs necessary for the university to successfully meet its Climate Action Plan (CAP). This plan calls for St. Lawrence University to work towards achieving climate neutrality by 2040. We seek an innovative person with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills who will collaborate with partners both on and off campus to ensure the university meets the goals outlined in the CAP. This is a full-time position and has a dotted line report to the University’s Vice President and Treasurer.
Responsibilities
- Identify and prioritize both short and long-term capital and other sustainability projects
- Work directly with project managers in facilities or consultants to oversee the implementation of annual work plans
- Collect, analyze and report all sustainability data to third party organizations and surveys such as AASHE, Sierra Club, NACBUO
- Collaborate with the University’s Advancement division to pursue relevant external funding opportunities for sustainability-related activities/projects on campus
- Serve as sustainability liaison for St. Lawrence University with other institutions, businesses, local governments, foundations and community organizations
- Develop and supervise student internships and work on sustainability-related issues
- Perform work planning, designing, constructing, modifying or improving and maintaining facilities either by in-house or contractual effort; regulate and enforce environmental engineering policies, programs or activities by establishing standards, promoting improvements, evaluating compliance and directing action to secure satisfactory results.
Skills/Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Engineering (Energy, Environmental, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil), Environmental Science, Sustainability, or related field preferred
- At least 5 years of experience in green/sustainability-related project management. A Master’s degree and three years-experience may be considered.
- Strong oral and writing skills, including formal and informal presentations, and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including faculty, facilities, board members, and students
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with a commitment to consensus building and collaboration
- Demonstrated data management skills required.
