Scientific Technician 2
(Full-time, Nonpermanent)

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one (1) full-time, non-permanent, Scientific Technician 2 position located in the Wildlife Program.  The duty station for this position will be determined upon hire.  Work on weekends and holidays possible. The employment duration for this position is approximately 12 weeks starting September 1, 2016.

As a member of a four-person field crew conducting pelagic surveys (out to shelf break) along the outer Washington coast using line transect distance sampling for all seabirds and marine mammals encountered. These surveys allow researchers and managers to model population trends and evaluate progress towards recovery for species that are listed in Washington.

This is a nonpermanent field position. For all tasks the employee will be responsible for adhering to established survey protocols and collecting/compiling relevant data. Survey work will directly address tasks spelled out in contracts and species recovery and management plans. This work will address WDFW’s objectives of maintaining healthy, diverse fish and wildlife populations.

Duties

  • Collect detailed at-sea survey data.
  • Use line transect distance sampling for all seabirds and marine mammals encountered and enter data into specialized software on a laptop computer during surveys in accordance with established survey protocols.
  • Assist with wildlife science research projects to include conduct and monitor seabird colony surveys and assist other research biologists with field work as needed.
  • Maintain WDFW equipment and clean research boat (daily), binoculars, electronic equipment and communication equipment.

Qualifications

  • Seabird Identification skills, specifically pelagic species, in breeding and non-breeding plummages are required.
  • Experience doing field work on a small boat in varying weather conditions.
  • Work collaboratively as a team (must be able to live and work cooperatively in a team of four people) with excellent attention to detail and communicate clearly.
  • Experience surveying seabirds, preferably using line transect distance sampling.
  • Proficient use of a personal computer.
