Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a graduate student intern to work with the Graffiti and Illegal Dumping Teams and the Clean City manager to provide timely assistance to Seattle residents involved in maintaining clean and safe neighborhoods. The intern will learn about and assist in providing information on city programs to residents, maintaining databases, and identifying new strategies for achieving program goals. This intern will report to the Clean City manager.

There is currently one graduate internship available, with hire date slated for early November. This internship is for up to 18 months or graduation, whichever comes first. We require a minimum one year commitment for this internship opportunity.

Learning objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • Gain experience assisting with the development of customer education and Seattle Municipal Code (SMC) enforcement strategies
  • Learn and gain experience in project management and strategic planning skills
  • Learn and gain experience working in teams and adapt in a professional atmosphere
  • Gain experience and opportunity to apply skills and knowledge from classroom to actual on-the-job experiences
  • Gain practical experience in chosen career field, and discover employment options within academic discipline

Job Responsibilities

Under close supervision, the selected intern will:

  • Work with customers in the area of cleaning and maintaining neighborhoods, support associated activities, report on tasks completed;
  • Develop promotional plans and materials;
  • Attend community meetings, representing program objectives to the public and staff; provide information on city programs to residents;
  • Assist with the Illegal Dumping and SHARPS pilot programs
  • Maintain databases;
  • Identify new strategies to achieve program goals, that include programs such as Illegal Dumping, SHARPS, and Graffiti.

Qualifications

Education: Applicants must be full-time graduate students, pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies, Communications, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Health, or closely related fields. Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Enrollment Exception: Students are not required to be enrolled during summer sessions, but must provide documentation of continued Autumn enrollment at the end of Spring quarter.

Experience Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced proficiency in using Word and Excel
  • Experience and ability to complete and maintain applicable paperwork, including timely reports submission.

  • Highly organized with good customer service skills
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people, and a strong desire to assist the community
  • Ability to work independently, creatively and with good judgment in problem solving and time management
  • Familiarity with GIS systems

Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement schedules (15-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity will permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally performed between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday.

Some weekend and evening work will be required.
