Freedom Education Project Puget Sound is seeking volunteers to teach at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor, Washington. This volunteer would instruct a class of 15 – 20 students. We offer stipends to all of our volunteers to cover travel costs to the prison!

Winter Term 2017

Term will run from January 3rd to March 22th. We are looking for teachers for:

  • ENVS& 101: Intro to EnvironmentalScience (See attached syllabus. Books and supplies are provided!)

o Need co-teacher to alternate teaching days with a teacher that is already committed and has taught it in the past. Each teacher would teach once a week for 11 weeks.

o Need assistance with the 4/5 additional lab sections (can be same person as the co-teacher or additional volunteer who can only commit to lab 2-2.5 hr lab sections). Dates for the labs are flexible and TBD.

Background

The purpose of the Freedom Education Project Puget Sound (FEPPS) is to promote the importance of quality higher education opportunities to people in and after prison.  We offer a rigorous college program inside the Washington Correction Center for Women (WCCW) and work to increase access to educational opportunity for prisoners and former prisoners in Washington State. Credit for the college-level classes we offer are transcribed through Tacoma Community College. Key Responsibilities

  • Teach once a week at WCCW. 9601 Bujacich Rd NW, Gig Harbor, WA 98332.
  • Communicate classroom and student needs with FEPPS program coordinator.
  • Work with FEPPS program coordinator to evaluate students and place them into classes next semester.

Qualifications

  • MUST have a master’s degree or be in a PhD program.
  • Strongly believes in the benefit of providing a rigorous college education to the women incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center for Women.

Requirements

  • Must attend a Department of Corrections volunteer training. Offered once a month.
  • Must be able to provide your own transportationto and from the prison.
  • Must commit to teaching the entire 11/14 week semester.
  • Must be able to pick one or two of the following times to teach: 9:3 0 – 11:20, 1:30 – 3:50 or 6:30 – 8:50. Must get to prison 30 minutes before class begins.
