Job Description – Fisheries Biologist
FOCUS: Restoration monitoring and evaluation
LOCATION: CFS Watershed Sciences Lab, Issaquah, WA
Overview: Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is a fisheries consulting firm that conducts research and monitoring throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. Our mission is to rigorously apply the scientific method to afford our clients innovative, scientifically robust solutions to address a variety of fisheries and environmental challenges. We achieve this through effective and unbiased data collection, insightful analysis and interpretation, and clear communications and publication of results in scientific journals. The Fisheries Biologist provides support for the organization by conducting field and laboratory work, data collections, data analysis, literature reviews and problem solving for our clients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist and/or lead field crews on multiple projects and guide Technicians successfully in order to
help support the project work and data collection needed
- Perform hands on work which may include fish trapping and tagging, visual estimation
techniques (e.g., snorkeling, redd surveys) and physical habitat surveys
- Follow outlines provided by Project Managers to develop annual project reports including data
summaries, and analysis
- Test hypotheses, perform statistical analyses and problem solving for various projects, studies
and other assignments
- Conduct GIS/spatial data input, mapping, and summarizing
- Manage logistical items such as purchasing of equipment and supplies, and assigning various
duties and tasks to staff
- Conduct literature reviews and increase familiarity with scientific literature relevant to projects
- Perform other duties as assigned
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (required):
- Fisheries and/or Restoration Expertise: Demonstrated ability to work alone or as part of a
team collecting, recording and analyzing high-quality stream restoration monitoring data.
Knowledge and experience in the identification salmon and other stream fishes and conducting
stream habitat surveys in Pacific Northwest streams
- Project Management Skills: Serve as the Project/Task Lead on several projects and lead field
crews as necessary. Track project budget and complete all required products/reports for lead
projects.
- Team Leadership Skills: Within a team and Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) culture, sets
personal high performance and quality standards and enables the team to be successful. Views
all members of the team as critical and important and treats team members with respect and
professionalism. Able to collaborate with other team members. Mentors/develops Technician
team members.

CFS as a profitable business.

Desired Experience
- Experience conducting stream habitat and snorkel surveys using CHaMP, EMAP, ODFW or
similar protocols
- Experience leading field crews to conduct stream habitat and snorkel surveys
- Spatial analyses in ArcGIS or QGIS and Spatial Analyst environments
- Experience using R statistical computing and programming to summarize and analyze data
- Experience operating 4-wheel drive vehicles, boats, trailers and other field equipment
- Data recording, management and analysis in statistics and database software
Education/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology or an equivalent field and 3 years of related
experience or Master’s degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology or an equivalent field and 1 year of
related experience performing fisheries or wildlife studies
- Proficient with MS Office Suite including Access
- Demonstrated skills in data collection, entry, and analysis, developing graphs and
communicating project methods and findings in presentations and reports
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
- Must be comfortable working in the aquatic environment including wading, snorkeling, and
boating in rivers, streams, lakes and estuaries
- Working irregular hours (including weekends and evenings) in various kinds of weather and
potentially rugged terrain occasion in order to meet project deadlines
- Travel to remote areas to conduct field work for 3 to 10 days at a time. Able to drive safely in a
variety of weather conditions for extended distances.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
