General Statement of Duties:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities, the Assistant Director of Sustainability and EH&S develops a coherent, campus wide sustainability and environment, health and safety program. The Assistant Director of Sustainability and EH&S promotes a culture 
of sustainability and safety among the greater university community and its external stakeholders; identifies and prioritizes areas 
for university wide sustainability efforts; plans and develops
 programs; engages and collaborates with 
university administration, faculty, staff and students to enhance campus sustainability and safety efforts. Serves as a point person for sustainability activities, transportation, waste minimization, recycling, environmental stewardship, energy conservation and EH&S.

As authorized by the Assistant Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities, coordinates and works in a collaborative manner
 with external constituencies such as the state, federal, city of Salem, regional planning boards, and others; charges, provides guidance and 
supports the activities of the Sustainability Task Force.
 In addition, the Sustainability and EH&S Coordinator has the responsibility
 for identifying grant opportunities and funding, corporate and civic partnerships, and programs that promote campus
 sustainability efforts. The University is a member of Second Nature and is a signatory to the Carbon Commitment.

The Assistant Director of Sustainability and EH&S is also responsible for overseeing the safe handling, storage, and delivery of chemicals and other potentially hazardous substances on the campus. The successful incumbent is responsible for compliance with a variety of Federal, state, local and University regulations. The Assistant Director works in close collaboration with other University departments to insure that safety standards are maintained. The Assistant Director manages the campus chemical inventory, maintains detailed data and records, and develops campus procedures for delivery and storage of chemicals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Sustainability

  • Lead effort to assure compliance with the University’s Climate Commitment including:
  • Administer and implement the Climate Action Plan
  • Conduct and publish the Greenhouse Gas Inventory as required
  • Develop and identify sustainable goals and processes for the University
  • Work with campus departments, student and academic groups to improve sustainability
  • Develop and implement energy and sustainability training for employees
  • Recommend product purchases to campus departments
  • Create and administer education, awareness and outreach sustainability programs and efforts
  • Maintain the web presence for sustainability groups, both administrative and student oriented
  • Represent the University for all sustainability related public appearances
  • Serves as a resource to the Facilities Department in setting energy efficient design standards
  • Procures utility company rebates for renovation and construction projects
  • Researches grant funding possibilities for program, and draft funding proposals
  • Develop programs, advocate for sustainability practices, and facilitate interaction and collaboration among various groups on campus
  • Oversee the collection, synthesis, and dissemination of data on energy use and other performance indicators for the campus
  • Provide support to Residential Life initiatives to increase the sustainability of student residences
  • Liaise with counterparts at other educational institutions, businesses, government, and the community
  • Work with Public Relations to secure coverage of sustainability initiatives
  • Conducts an environmental awareness, energy and recycling orientation session for all new students during their campus orientation
  • Tracks new state and national green design standards and other innovations as this field evolves
  • Publicize, promote, and communicate sustainability efforts within and outside the campus community
  • Develop long and short-term strategic plans, recommending policy, and organizational changes needed to advance sustainability initiatives
  • Build, drive, and lead the sustainability agenda
  • Work closely with other campus stakeholders to ensure that environmental stewardship is integrated and aligned with all campus goals
  • Integrate sustainability values and practices
  • Work cross functionally with all departments

EH&S

  • Perform regular inspections of emergency response equipment to maintain proper function, including: emergency shower/eyewash stations, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of workplace facilities and equipment
  • Assist with hazardous materials management including chemical inventories and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS and SDS)
  • Help stage hazardous waste pickups and conduct regular inspections of waste accumulation areas
  • Assist with minor spill response and cleanup actions
  • Direct the training of a variety of EH&S programs including: Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Exposure Control, Lockout/Tag out, Confined Space, Respiratory Protection, Disaster Preparedness, and Emergency Response
  • Direct with occupancy, egress and life safety issues associated with normal setups and special events
  • Administer the EH&S program training documentation for all College employees
  • Communicate with faculty, staff, administration and students regarding environmental, health and safety issues

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs
  • Operational level expertise to implement a sustainability program; familiarity with sustainability best practices in higher education institutions
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as on a team, with minimal supervision
  • Prior experience analyzing cost/benefit of future and current programs and ability to understand and synthesize diverse research and outreach initiatives into a cogent whole
  • Experience in training, educational outreach, and organizational change and the ability to effectively provide training and guidance within diverse groups
  • Must have excellent oral and written communications skills; experience collaborating and communicating effectively with a diverse student, faculty, and staff population
  • Ability to complete training and obtain required certifications including RCRA, DOT, HAZWOPER and OSHA within 12 months of employment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in relevant field
  • 5+ years’ experience in related environment health field
  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional
  • Experience with AASHE, STARS Reporting and Second Nature Carbon Commitment
  • Demonstrated ability to administer and monitor various awarded contracts and monitor, workers, contractors and vendors for effectiveness and thoroughness
