Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) GIS Data Maintenance Unit is recruiting for an undergraduate level GIS intern. The GIS Data Maintenance Unit is responsible for maintaining GIS data layers related to drainage and wastewater and drinking water. These GIS data layers are fundamental to many of the day-to-day business activities carried out by SPU and other City departments. Additionally, the work unit also provides GIS support to field crews, customer service representatives, planners, engineers, inspectors, and other City employees.  The selected intern will participate in a variety of activities involved in the upkeep of GIS data.

This internship is expected to last up to 18 months or graduation, whichever comes first. We require a minimum 1-year commitment for this internship opportunity.

Learning Objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • Learn and gain experience performing research using a variety of methods
  • Learn and gain experience managing and interpreting various source materials
  • Learn and gain experience entering and updating GIS data via ArcGIS software
  • Gain experience performing field research in support of various SPU programs
  • Gain experience performing data analysis, producing cartographic products and/or creating digital datasets.
 Job Responsibilities:
The selected interns will work with GIS professionals in activities such as:

  • Perform research using a variety of methods including, but not limited to manuals, documents, and field checks
  • Manage and interpret various source materials such as maps, engineering plans, and hand-drawn sketches
  • Update and maintain tracking databases.
 Qualifications:
Education: Must be an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Cartography, Environmental Sciences, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Informatics, Architecture, or other related field.

Undergraduate applicants must be enrolled on either a part-time or full-time basis and maintain a 2.0 GPA for the duration of the internship.

Exception:  Students are not required to be enrolled during the summer sessions, but must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment at end of Spring quarter.

 Additional Information:
Hours:  During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-18 hours per week). This internship opportunity may permit up 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally performed between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday – Friday.
