Ecologist/Regulatory Specialist

The person in this position will work with clients and on project teams involving ecological assessments, regulatory compliance and permitting, and related technical assignments. Work tasks may include conducting and/or overseeing wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments; botanical and wildlife surveys; development of permit applications; planning wetland and stream restoration projects (including construction oversight); conducting environmental reviews; and negotiating with regulatory agencies. The specialist will work with scientists, engineers, and other Barr staff-as well as with regulatory staff and clients. This person will work to help clients address ecological and regulatory constraints and to prepare applications and reports required for project permitting and implementation. Additionally, the specialist will assist clients with wetland and stream mitigation related to development impacts.

NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of remote field locations and construction sites, and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided.

 

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. in ecology, biology, botany, hydrology, soil science, or related natural resources field

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Experience with fieldwork such as wetland delineations, habitat evaluations, threatened and endangered species surveys, etc.

Spreadsheet, word processing, and general computer skills, and working knowledge of ArcMap GIS software

Familiarity with GPS and related field data collection methodologies

Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulatory programs

Flexible working style, self-motivation, and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules as required to meet deadlines and client needs

Willingness and ability to conduct field work, which may involve travel

Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship

Acceptable driving record

 

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree and/or specialized experience in ecology, botany, or other natural sciences field

3-8 years of experience

Knowledge of and experience with wetland restoration design, construction observation, and wetland restoration project contracting and management

Knowledge of and experience with Minnesota/Upper Midwest counties, state, and federal regulations and permitting processes, including wetland delineation, permitting, restoration, and establishment

Experience in working and negotiating with regulatory agencies

Knowledge of state and federal endangered species programs

Experience writing and preparing state and federal environmental review and assessment documents and studies

Experience with power, pipeline, and mining clients
