Research Analyst Intern Spring/Summer 2018
Tumwater, WA
The internship will start on June 1, 2018 and end approximately September 15, 2018.
The start and end dates can be flexible.
This is a paid internship. The wage is $13.29/hour. The workload is 15-20 hours per week.

Here is a little bit about us:
The Washington State Economic and Revenue Forecast Council (ERFC) promotes state government financial stability by producing an accurate forecast of economic activity and General Fund revenue for the legislature and the governor to be used as the basis of the state budget.

Specifically this position assists in supporting the requirements of RCW 82.33A.010 to update selected benchmarks and providing comparative information for other states. Each year the council is required to prepare an official state economic climate report on the present status of benchmarks, changes since the previous report, and an analysis of benchmarks that may affect the ability of the state to compete economically at the national and international level.

You will have the opportunity to work with a small professional staff at the Washington State Economic & Revenue Forecast Council. This position gives you a chance to combine several skills (research, spreadsheet and other computer graphic capability, and economic analysis) in support of the Economic and Revenue Forecast Council staff, work experience for your resume, “state” experience, and a chance for you to grow into your future career!

Duties
Some of what you will be doing will include:

  • Updating the data and text of benchmarks in the Washington State Economic Climate Study.
  • Identifying new sources of data and update a workbook of the data.
  • Gathering, verifying, displaying, and analyzing data from a variety of sources, primarily the Internet.
  • Reporting on various economic indicators as they are released.
  • Learning about economic data releases by gathering and analyzing new data and providing a brief written analysis (time allowing).
  • Attending meetings and networking with working economists in state government.
  • Attending meetings where there is opportunity to meet and learn from working. economists in state government.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:

  • A sophomore standing in college by the end of the spring quarter;
  • A major field of study in economics or related field;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficiency working with the Internet and Microsoft Word;
  • Skilled with the use of spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel, to create and manipulate large or complex spreadsheets, use complex mathematical formulas to calculate data, and link worksheets. Also the ability to import data from other sources, filter lists, and create and format charts and graphs.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team is essential.

PREFERRED:

  • Familiarity with econometric software such as eViews, SAS, R, or related;
  • Completed coursework in statistics.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Paid sick leave may be used for reasons included in WAC 357-31-130.
