Job Description
The Alaska Botanical Garden is a community-supported nonprofit living museum. The Botanical Garden is looking to hire an outgoing, cheerful, and reliable individual to join our staff this summer season. This position is responsible for greeting visitors, selling admission and memberships, handling sales from our Gift Shop, providing information on programs, special events and general garden information. Visitor Services staff will be working with cash on a daily basis. All staff work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. As such, this position may be involved with horticulture maintenance and event support. This can include but is not limited to: setting up tables, chairs, and tents, as well as weeding, watering, planting etc. The individual will be expected to oversee and manage volunteers.
The Alaska Botanical Garden is open seven days a week during the summer and this position will require evening and weekend shifts on a set rotation.
Required Duties & Responsibilities
Greets visitors and handles entry fees (cash and credit card transactions)
Answers visitor questions, face-to-face or on the phone
Orients visitors to trail system and gardens
Delivers wildlife safety information to all visitors
Ability to work in a fast paced and busy environment
Works indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
Ability to safely lift 50 pounds
Works directly with individuals and volunteer groups of up to 10 people
Assists with setup and removal of tents, chairs, and other items associated with garden events
Interacts with visitors, volunteers and donors with the highest level of respect and professionalism
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule depending on garden events
Required Education and Experience
At least one year/season of experience providing customer service in a public setting
Experience handling cash and credit card transactions
Basic knowledge of gardening in Alaska or a similar climate
Awareness of safety issues related to wildlife management, specifically bear and moose
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire
Must possess a valid driver’s license
