The Seattle Department of Transportation is seeking four undergraduate or graduate students, preferably, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate, to collect updated information on SDOT and privately maintained street trees, and report on inventory updates.  Intern will also work with iTree software to report on the social and economic benefits of Seattle’s street trees.

Educational Benefit to Student:

The position will help the student understand how their coursework translates into the daily operations of a city urban forestry division, in particular, the collection of data and entry into the tree inventory, and analysis of GIS data to determine planting potential throughout the city. Accurate inventory data is essential for planning maintenance of SDOT assets, as well as providing support to citizens who need permits to maintain their trees.  An on line tree map has been released, and accurate inventory data will provide better customer service to the public. The position also affords the incumbent an opportunity to better their plant ID skills, and to see how trees perform their functions in the built environment.

 Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Open all students, undergraduate and graduate students, who are enrolled in an accredited educational program, preferably studying:  Forestry, Urban Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Arboricultural, Horticulture, Natural Resource Management.

Undergraduate students will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

Experience: 

  • Experience in or knowledge related to tree identification.
  • General knowledge of ArcGIS products
  • Ability to perform ad-hoc research using internet explorer
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access)

Desired Qualifications:

  • Project management experience
  • Familiarity with tree inventory applications

Must have a valid WA State Driver’s License and a safe driving record.  A complete driving abstract will be required at the time of hire.

 Additional Information:
Start/End Dates:  Intern will start in late June/early July and end early September, 2018.

Schedule:  Intern will work between 25-40 hours/week.  Work hours can be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Salary:  Undergraduates will be paid $16.56/hour. Graduates will be paid $20.30/hour.
