Sea Turtle Internship – Sea Turtle, Inc. (South Padre Island, TX)

Description: Sea Turtle, Inc. is a 501-c3 non-profit organization with a three-part mission of sea turtle rehabilitation, conservation and public education. Our complex includes two facilities; a rehabilitation center connected by 500 feet of boardwalk over a saltwater lagoon that leads to our education building.   Within the facilities, we offer educational presentations to our visitors and provide a self-guided tour opportunity so visitors can see our rehabilitating patients and learn about sea turtle biology and conservation. Additionally, we run the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nesting program on South Padre Island and Boca Chica beach from April to August, protecting Kemp’s ridley nests and releasing hatchlings into the Gulf of Mexico.

Sea Turtle, Inc. is looking for one Education Intern to assist with presentations and enhance the visitor experience at our facility. A detailed description of duties can be found below:

Duties:
– Answer general and in-depth questions about sea turtle patients in our hospital.
– Design a public presentation to utilize during the internship.
– Conduct presentations to audience of up to 200 people, ranging from pre-K to senior citizen age groups about our mission and work.
– Interpret rehab procedures and feeding techniques to the public.
– Assist our Education staff in updating displays in our facilities.
– Complete an independent project that benefits the education program.

– Participate in sea turtle enrichment with our rehab staff while learning to interpret       the purpose of the enrichment to our visitors.

QualificationsUndergraduate applicants must be of Junior standing or higher. U.S. citizenship or paperwork to work in the U.S. is required. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and hold a valid driver’s license. Passport recommended but not required. Interns must be comfortable working in adverse weather conditions including high heat, direct sunlight, freezing cold fronts, high winds and humidity. The ideal candidate would have a great interest in informal environmental education. This internship involves daily interaction with the public. Excellent communication and public speaking skills are required.

*Bilingual English/Spanish is highly preferred.


Housing provided on South Padre Island with $35 per work day stipend. Food and transportation not provided. Personal vehicle is not required on the island.
